Adding The Low E String

Now it's time to add the last three notes on the low E string to our open position major scale pattern.

We'll finish the pattern by playing the 3rd fret of the low E string with your ring finger, 1st fret with your index finger and the open E string. Exactly the same as we had on the high E string.

Now let's try that, like we've done it in the previous lesson, but now with the full scale pattern.

Good lesson. One thing I don't get is above the tab you have pick direction, note names but no rests? I think it would be helpful to have a rest symbol above the tab were there are rests instead of a open space.

Hello - thanks so much for your question. Indeed, when there are rests, they will be notated on the top staff. However, in this example, there are no rests! In the first 2 measures, straight 8th notes are played with no rests in between. In the 3rd measure, there are 2 half notes. So, the open low E string is played, and it is held out ringing until the 3rd beat, when you strum the final chord. That chord is also held out for 2 beats to complete the bar. So there are no rests in this example. Hope this helps!
