Learning The String Names

Now it's time let's learn the string names. The silly, but effective way to remember the string names is with the story of Eddie.

Eddie Ate Dynamite, Good Bye Eddy. So that means our string names are E, A, D, G, B and E. But you don't have to memorize that right now. Just remember the story and we'll come back to it along the way. Eddie Ate Dynamite, Good Bye Eddy.

Sometimes, these strings are also referred to with numbers where 1 is the E-string that's closest to the floor and then it goes 2 3 4 5 6 as you go towards the ceiling. Keep in mind that we call it the high E-string even though it's closer to the floor. That's because the pitch gets higher, the closer you get to the floor. If you try to sing the notes you'll feel what I mean.

After each lesson I have to use the previous page arrow to go back to the PROGRESS page and download the next lesson. There must be an easier and smoother way to progress through the lessons?
Mike Olekshy 1 month ago

Hey there - thanks so much for your question! If you are on a desktop computer - make sure to click the CONTENT tab directly under the notation window. This is the easiest way to navigate to the next lesson, as you can see a list of all lessons in the tutorial and simply click to the one you want to go to next. If you are on the app - simply click PREVIOUS or NEXT at the bottom of the screen to navigate. Hope this helps!!

Hello. Yesterday I subscribed to Guitartricks and I really like it so far! I have a technical question though: when I login on the website from Firefox the video window of lessons doesn't show up. It all works from Chrome. As Firefox is my favorite internet browser would you have any tips for me on how to solve this? What I already tried: disabled my extensions, deleted cookies and searched the internet for tips. Hope you can help. Best regards, Theo

I have a mini Taylor guitar which is smaller. Do I hold it differently vs a normal sized guitar?
Mike Olekshy 7 months ago

Hey there, thanks so much for your question! Yes try to hold the guitar the same way as a larger guitar. You may have to experiment and make minor adjustments to get the guitar to sit steady in this way. Hope this helps!!

What is the difference between the music note with the 6 and the 4 (row 1) and the 3rd row with the music note and no 6 or 4? Also in the second row why are the tabs backwards
Mike Olekshy 7 months ago

Hi there - thanks so much for your question! The 6 and 4 represent the "time signature" of the music. In this case, the music is shown in 6/4 time - which means 6 quarter notes per measure. So, the top staff is one complete measure with 6 quarter notes played on the guitar. Each note is plucking an open string on the guitar - starting from the low E string and ending on the high E string. The bottom staff is the 2nd measure, and it is show backwards, because in the video, Anders then plays each string starting on the high E string, and coming down and finishing on the low E string. I highly recommend you check out this tutorial on how to read tablature: https://www.guitartricks.com/how-to-read-guitar-tabs Hope this helps!!

Hi Jeff, thanks for your question. Click on the "Progress" menu tab on the left side of the main GT page. You will see your lesson history there.
