I had an older model--made in Korea--that I used as my stage beater for 2 years. When I bought it , it had a headstock repair that I understand was fairly common for these guitars. It didn't affect the playability of the guitar. Sustain was good, and I finally upgraded to a modded Agile 2800 to take it's place.

I use to have an Epi LesPaul that a guy gave me because I was without a guitar at the time, and he thought I really should have one. Anyway, it had a bolt on neck that always kept coming loose after a few hour's of playing, so, it was a bit of a pain when we were playing parties!!
But this Ultra II sounds like an axe I could be interested in since I have a touch of 'Carpal Tunnel' in both wrests, and 'arthritus' in all my fingers, making playing rather painful... So, I may just have to jount down to the 'ol Guitar Center, and see if I can afford one of the Ultra II's!!

Thanks for the reviews of two Epiphone Les Paul models and the contest. Thanks to Sweetwater for their participation. I hope it brings more profitable business their way!

I have "real" Gibsons, Fenders and Epis. Each has it's own "personality" - my stable includes a Gibson Les Paul that is really sweet, an Epiphone Les Paul Goldtop that is awesome, and an Epiphone Les Paul Special that's really pretty to look at, but until it get the frets worked on it's really hard to play.

Epiphone guitars used to have the stigma of being cheap junk - back when Gibsons were affordable - but the quality has improved steadily and considerably over the years. It appears that Epiphone has taken center stage with the likes of the Ultra II and Prophecy, while Gibson is quietly issuing variations on the same themes (don't get me wrong - the Anniversary Flying V is amazing!). In short, Epiphone can hold their own as a sought-after brand.

I'm having good luck with Epiphone knockoffs, all except for one super cheap model which came with a bad ground.

My oldest kid has an Epiphone verson of the Gibson double cutaway (SG) which has kept him satisfied for a year.

For normal stuff, we're Guitar center and Sweetwater customers. But the sanshin and charango come from afar ....

I always wondered how Gibson/Epiphone could sell a Les Paul for $300 and for $2,000. Your review gave some insight into the differences and the simple similarities. Three hundred to $700 is and easier stretch but youi zeroed in a couple of important points to be on the watch for. Thanks for honest, but somewhat LP biased review.

I've always had a bit of a snobby attitude towards Epiphones, but perhaps I could be persuaded by winning one?

I play a Hamer Duotone customshop model, and a Taylor 514CE GA.

We love Eppi's, here at our house-- most of them play really well and
especially the ones copied after classic Gibsons. I have played the LP Jr that they make fro a year now and my dad has a Sheraton II.

My dad has a lot of Gibson experience, having owned them and played them in the past, and he says in many cases the Epps are very close to just as good.

...put my Epi EL-00 ("We don't need no stinkin' Blues King!") down long enough to play either (or BOTH!!!) of my two new LesterPaulines. I cordially invite all posters/contestants to my crib to play a few consolation licks on either (or BOTH!!!) of my new axes. It's just the kinda guy I am. Humble cuss, too! My apologies to everyone for winning. It's simply a confirmation that the best man/woman/beast doesn't always win...

Take care everyone! Tonefully,
SmoothHead Johnny

PS - Please don't tell my Gibby '61 RI SG that there's another mule kickin' in my stall.

PPS - I play heavy metal: an antique all (heavy) metal Reso biscuit!

I've only owned one Epiphone LP. That was a long time ago. Didn't really know what I had back then. But I recently went to a local music store and played a really beautiful Epi LP( I think it was a studio, but I'm not sure) and fell in love with it. It played really well but not quite as well as my Ibanez RG. But I could easily get used to the difference. :)

I agree to the rules,too!

This is the kind of reviews I've been hoping to see! Since I'm not likely to run out and buy a new Gibson anytime soon, I've been looking at Epiphones... and it looks like they have some remarkable values.

I'd like to see similar reviews on some Epi SG style guitars...

Believe it or not, I was recently introduced to the "Les Paul" guitar by my 12 year old son, who wanted me to check them out online about a month or (2) ago. I was looking to get him the "Epiphone Les Paul Junior Electric" to replace the Fender Stratt (in need of repair) that I had bought for him a few years ago for Christmas. The Stratt was going to convert over to me if I bought the Les Paul for him, but they were out of stock until the end of july! Since then, we managed to get some of the "Kinks" worked out, and now his Stratt is playing better than ever. But... I still don't have an "Electric" to call my own! Although we're just learning, and so far have never played a Les Paul, it's obvious from all the talk about 'em that either one of these guitars would be a great choice for the Beginner as well as the Advanced musician. It would be an "Awsome Thing" to win one! And, I promise... I'd share with my son!!

God Bless!!!

I am so glad I became a member of this site. Opportunities Abound! As a young boy learning guitar in the 70's, my father bought me a Les Paul copy (Gold tone). We couldn't afford an amp so he would occassionally allow me to plug into his stereo system. (Quad) I loved it. Later, after many hours of practice he broke down and bought me a pig nose amp. Good memories for me. Both guitars are beautiful but I love the low action when playing. Dad is still going strong at 87 years old, but he won't let me plug into his new system.
