Description

Both John Mayer's ability to write great music along with use of good technique has always set him apart as an artist. This example in the key of E major demonstrates a mixture of these two things in a simple, yet effective, chord progression. The 4 bar example demonstrates creative chord substitution along with a very percussive feel with the right hand. The technique aspect to this example is the use of the thumb whenever a chord with an E string root is played. Combining these two elements shows the range of John's use of melodic writing and technique.

A similar technique can be heard in the song:
Waiting on the World to Change (Continuum)
