Description
One thing that is often overlooked within basic harmony is mixing a moving bass line over one or two simple voiceings. Taking these simple chords and changing the bass line underneath creates a great dynamic in song-writing and rhythm guitar. John Mayer's use of this technique sits well within a pop-rock setting, and this example works to showcase that as well. Using Dropped D tuning, this example demonstrates a progression in D major that makes use of two voiceings on the upper strings with a moving bass line on the low D and A strings. This creates a very melodic section to a song or a strong rhythm guitar part that stands out on it's own.
A similar technique can be heard in the song:
Your Body is a Wonderland (Room for Squares)
