Guitar Glossary: Sharp

Sharp

A symbol (#) used to indicate a note with a pitch raised by half a step. On a guitar, if you fret the A note on the fifth fret of the E string, the sixth fret is A#. This applies for all notes except B and E, which do not have sharps. If a sharp symbol is next to either of these, you simply play the next note up, which is still one fret away.
