Ok, I'm going out on a limb on this one. I noticed the title of the thread is "fastest guitarist you know." Well, I don't personally know any of the people mentioned here so if I'm going by the people I actually know then I am the fastest guitarist I know. I don't have an accurate speed but compared to the other guitarists I know I am much faster. Not boasting, just taking the thread in a different direction.

Here here!

I couldn't read the entire thing, though I know this thread is just about the wonderful mindless, boring, play as many notes in a second as you possibly can type of guitarists. Weeee, so 3 songs and 8 million notes later, i'm ready for something cool to listen to. :)

Not the fastest ever, but hey, there is always some of Jeff Beck's newer stuff, like the solo from Pay Me No Mind. At least he has class, style. . . the ability to write a song that won't put you to sleep in half a minute, hell TONE! He plays with a single Marshall 50 watt amp a 4 x 12 Marshall cab, and a Wah pedal, that's it.

Have you ever noticed that these guys who can play incredibly fast, have like the most. . . fake, boring "sound" you can possibly imagine? Great, they can play fast, but their notes have no impact, no bass, they pass right through you like nothingness. What ever happened to the days of real, heavy, crunchy, bad-ass tones, eh? I'm not talking, turn the Gain up all the way on your brand new Mesa amp, no no no, I mean something that has more than distortion, and really high highs and mids.

Give me something INTERESTING FOR ONCE!

The fastest guitar player that I "know" would also have to be me. My dad has been playing for 35 years, and is by all means one hell of a song writer, but he reminds me more of Eric Clapton (aka "slowhand") then say a Jimi Hendrix or Jeff Beck.

I sound like a total Jimmy Page rip. . . maybe cause I am. :D

Anyway, enough banter, time for bed (2:30 am, just got done recording In My Time of Dying).

After 64 pages I kind of wonder if there's anyone here who's read them all.

The fact that it has 64 pages doesn't concern me, but the fact that a 2001 thread is still going strong in 2005 does...

I just heard yesterday that someone (I think he could be Aussie, but I can't be sure) has just been named the fastest guitarist in the world (by Guinness world records). Canā€™t remember the name (might post it later on) but he can play around 40 notes per second .

Edit: the guy's name is Jeremy Barnes and he is an Aussie.

his web site is here

That is hella fast...but fast isnt anything unless you have soul. Sure fast sounds cool sometimes but I'd much rather listen to a Clapton or a BB King solo than a Steve Vai or this random Aussie you are talking about

Back when Kirk Hammett was allowed to be his own man he was the fastest. And though Randy Rhoads didn't take full advantage of it all the time, he had the highest speed/accuracy ratio. I guess today it's Yngwie Malmsteen.

Like Leedogg said, Kirk Hammet was never close to the fastest guitarist of the day. Just listen to the boys picking speeds. As far as speed goes, Hammet never had anything on the following guitarists: Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Paul Gilbert, John Petrucci, Yngwie Malmsteen, Zakk Wylde, Marty Friedman, Jason Becker, Chris Impelliteri and COUNTLESS others. Hammet is half-assed at best, even before he discovered the Wah pedal and turned to total crap. Master of Puppets is one kickass solo, but it's certainly not one written by the fastest player in the game. Not even one OF the fastest.

PS, if Malmsteen is accurate, then I will never post here again. With the scalloped frets, he can't help but bend a few notes out of tune (which he does quite a bit) by pressing down to hard.

Edit: forgot to include Eric Johnson in the list of people faster than Hammet. Also Greg Howe.

Actually, that list isn't really accurate. I've clocked a few of the songs, and Yngwie's fastest moment is not even in far beyond the sun. In a few live tracks (Baroque and Roll) he plays a bit faster. Kirk Hammet is not the third fastest guitarist in the world (not saying that to be difficult, just honest). That 19 notes per second from Damage Inc. is a tapping lick. Any player up there can do that. If people want to talk speed, tapping like the simple, simple lick from Damage should not be included. Anyone can play that, and the fact that it's there at all is bull****. Alternate picking, sweeping, and COMPLEX tapping licks measure speed. Not wankery. In fact, by their very logic, Kirk Hammet's solo in "One" is BARELY slower than the one in Damage. And since almost everyone on these boards can play the tapping lick from One (certainly almost everyone in the guitar store I frequent) we can disqualify Kirk from this competition. In fact, the fastest alt picking run of his I can think of is in Seek And Destroy where he plays 13.8666667 notes-per-second, but it's the sloppiest piece of crap I've ever heard on a studio album. Well...in Master of Puppets he plays 14 nps almost on the nose (faster actually, but the run in which he goes faster doesn't count. Anyone can do it).
