Dont believe that Andy Van Hatcher guy...If you visit that site, If you just have a good common sense you will notice its all full of lies and conceited claims.
Imagine saying that his pick melts due to extreme speed and you litterally cant see his hand move while playing....see what i mean. Im a Science professor on Quantum physics at the same time Im fascinated by guitar music and my interest in knowing the limits of physical speed attained in guitar playing so I know that its just baseless. to prove my point try this experiment...If you have a very thin extra pick , try burning it with your lighter for 1 second or maybe count 5 to 10 seconds..did it fully melt..of course not!! if Real fire can't how much more in just picking. And for the other claim, the truth is even if your fretting hand plays 1000 notes per second you can still see it, just blurry coz your hand is composed of fixed matter so no matter how fast you play its still visible. So guys ignore It..He just dont know what he's talking about. Continue your quest for speed

There are a lot of fast guitarist out there, some are known and some are unknown. Some very good examples are Malmsteen, Angelo, Rusty Cooley, George Bellas, Petrucci, Buckethead, etc. But to sumarize everything thats been said and written in this thread, speed isn't the foundation of the best and greatest guitarist, its just one factor. there are many other things to consider; tone, feeling, creativity, and innovation. Anyone can play fast given the proper time and training but very few can compose quality music no matter how they try. Music's main goal is touch the soul of the listener and it is not a contest, coz there are no race to be won. But if your passion is mindless wanking. then its up to you and this forum will really help in satisfying your curiosity since this thread is really created in seeking and determining the fastest.

Oh by the way, the fastest guitar playing ever recorded is done by Marcus Paus. It's official, check this out:

Hehehe sounds nice isn't It?...Peace and good luck to all wankers.
Guitarplaying is 1 Percent Inspiration, 99 Percent Perspiration... :)

Anyone who has ever seen Rusty Cooley wil defeinitely agree, he is the fastest and most technical guitartist about.... maybe not the greatest in terms of listenable music though!

Herman Li's pretty fast, but just from listening to him he's not as fast as Yngwie. I hate saying that since I love Herman Li's playing and despise Yngwie's, but Herman Li can't touch the dude's speed.

407 posts?! 407? That's how long it's taken us thus far to make a decision?

And the amazing thing is - this forum is still on the point of the original question... how is this possible?

You prove a good point with that. I've seen threads lost by the second post, but this one's going strong.

It may as well be. It's been lingering around since 11-14-2001.

Ok. My attempt at starting a band is progressing in the right direction. Today we're jamming with a 3rd, maybe even a 4th person. Just depends on if the rhythm guitarist (Eric, who will probably switch to bass) was able to get the drummer to show up. The other guy (Mike) showing up is going to be pretty much just guitars. Eric and I will probably switch from time to time since we're both capable bassists as well and he's probably gonna want to do some riffing himself. Since I like playing bass as well, I've no problem with the switching. Might make for an interesting thing on stage. All the members suddenly change positions. We've also got a sort of back up plan in case we can't find a drummer. I'm learning to play the drums. hell, worst case scenario, I develop a sense of rhythm. That reminds me, I'd never thought about it until Eric pointed out to me why I can't play with a steady rhythm too often. Apparantly most of the stuff I write is in some off the wall timing. Cool, I guess.

This all relates to your request because we're all guitarists. You never said anything about staying on fast, famous guitarists.

First of all, don't you mean "can't?"

Secondly - that's the darndest thing! We aren't judging talent! We're judging speed!

I'd have to say Shawn Lane or Buckethead.
Blues is easy to play, but hard to feel.

I think Francesco Parreri is the fastest I've seen so far but the guy has no heart...For me, I'll go with Yngwie and Batio because of their speed and maturity...
