band
lol, i wasnt saying you were a prick. i was just saying alot of people might think you are. You might go through alot of band members before you come across the ones. Normally alot of people do, you might just go through a few more :)

(my opinion) Answer: You guys need to get with people who are on the same level as you. When every band member is on a different level, I don't think it works out. Like I suffer said, you may have to go through several peeps before you find the right ones. When you do, I think you'll find that good drummers and good bass players can surprise you when they put something to your stuff that brings a whole new light to it.

Ok i c, but let me put you in a situation,
you are starting a band ok, u are the guitarest and you only need a bass player and a drummer, you dont want the music to focused only on you, and you write alot of songs and you are the singer in the band, so if you would go about the way you suggest, say u want to do these awsome songs that u have listened too, and also you want your band to be one of the better bands , anyways, you got these great covers AND originals to do, so you badly want to do these, but then your bass player comes up and wants to do these songs and your like,"man these songs arent what i want the band to be like and they arent me and they will make are band sound bad", because you know you can make the band rock but these songs will make your band less better and your bass player is like we are doing these songs, because hey no one there is to tell him sorry but lets try something else, instead everyone argues saying who do you say that we are gonna do this song, but in your heart you know that this song is not good and that the songs you have are great songs and will get people lieking your music. But how do you go about that situation, yeah you could say ok, then more crappy songs would come along with him, and more and more, and your band will become something that you really didnt want it to be, u know what im saying.
But i know that alot of you are gonna say " well i would have the band decide". i see this but the people in your band you can tell arent wanting stuff the same direction as you, and heck you are thinkin why cant i decide? i started the band, u want your band to go good and you know it can but you got 2 other people with different views and u know they are views that you really dont like. just put yourself in something position like that and just let me know what you would do, im interested into seeing what you have to say about this situation.

Theres no way for me to word this without it sound like im a being a bitch, but im not. lol
What makes you think you know whats good for the band? The other members might think THEY know. Its a vicious cycle.
Is your band going to be playing gigs? And are you planing on trying to get signed? If so then you'll probably have to it down talk to the band members and see where they want the direction of the band to go. See if it matches yours.
If your just going to be doing this as a hobbie, then maybe you could do some of the songs they want.

I am looking for a band to go somewhere with instead of a hobby, and your right i would need to discuss where they want to go, because i'm looking at the big picture. Kinda like what if for say james hetfield and Lars urlich, theyr both kinda run the band in a way together but leave room for kirk hammett and the robert guy on bass to do some stuff they want but i know that lars, james, and Kirk all write the songs and they are all good, but say if the bass plater wrote a song that wasnt good, i dont think that james and lars would accept it because they have big expectations for there band. So someone has to kind of control the songs, becuase they do know what good songs are. good songs are emotional in a way and have a good beat and are catchy, i think everyone agree's with that and if you know thats what you write and the type of music you want to do. Its kinda hard to exlpain but from noticingthemistake u need people with things in common but it's gonna be hard for me because im from , WhereAreWe Iowa, not really but im from iowa and there arent as much of selection for band members as somewhere like california, and it seems like no one can start something from iowa but you know you gotta keep trying if you really want to do something big with music. I dont know if you understand where im coming from but thats how i feel.

First, you should have people in your band that are into what you want to do. Like you don't stick someone who wants to play Pop music into a hard rock band. If your an awesome guitar player as you say you are, the drummer and bass shouldn't out shine you. Drums and bass are rhythm players, sure they should add little licks and tricks but a good groove is alot stronger than a solo. You don't hear many bass or drum solos in songs. If you get cool people in your band, your bass player may be like "what do you think of this?". And if someone says, "eh they don't like". Yeah they might be hurt, but someone cool isn't going to cry about it. The attitude - it has to be my way is want people aint gonna go for. I'm sorry but unless you find weak minded people, your going to have problems with that attitude. Even if you do, your band won't rock unless everyone is a strong member of the band. Vai doesn't play with ****ty and weak minded musicians for a good reason, even professional musicans will put there own thing to a song. Studio musicians usually require a lead sheet and then they put something to it of the liking of whoever hired them. You want absolute control - go solo! A good leader in music is one who coordinated and sometimes suggests, not tells or commands. You should expect the same backlash as you got from the replies of this post.

Like you said people that are like its my way or nothing is what people dont want to be with, i also know this from someone i know they have a band and they treat there band like "My way or the highway" and he is like when they mess up he is like "WTF is that and he is lucky that they even stay in his band because without them he wouldnt have a band. so i know that you cant be a freakin dictator, but i also do not want to be a solo artist but i kinda want to push my band in the direction i tihnk is right.

ok in my band, I write 75% of the music, and according to most people I am the show, not to sound conceeded or anything
the thing is tho, that our band wouldn't be anything if it wasnt for every other member adding their suggestions to everything, we all work with each other and thats what makes us work
just try to have a little more of an open mind about your band

to the_wizard hey i know thats what ive been trying to say the whole time, i am open to alot of stuff i just have to kinda filter out what i feel may hurt the band, but i do believe letting everyone contribute to the songs and everything but i believe that i could lead the band further.

MadGuitarest:
Maybe what you ought to consider is buying some cheap gear or renting studio time and cutting a full-length demo or album and shop that around to find your band mates to perform the stuff live.
By using this approach, your potential drummer/bassist/whoever will know exactly what you're looking for. Plus, then you can excercise complete creative-control over the drums, bass, guitar, and everything.
Of course, for this to work, you'll have to be multi-talented and somewhat knowledgeable about every instrument. Then you can perform all of the parts on your recording.
I recently just recorded an entire instrumental album this exact way. I performed the bass, guitars, and drums. Now, if I want, I could get potential band mates to perform my tunes exactly how I recorded them.
It's a thought. It's not unrealistic either. By the way, unless you want to name the band after yourself, it's going to be very hard to excercise authority.

Finger_cruncher: I c what your saying but i do not want to have complete instrument control i just am gonna write the lyrics and the guitar work to alot of songs and let my members fill in what sounds the best, it wouldnt be necesarry to make a demo tape
