yeah this thread really needs to be locked
To improve technique and of course trying to keep all as clean as possible. I know my own limits and speed limits and so on I never play anything I'm not capable of. That wouldn't make any sense. After three years of playing I tried to play everything as fast as possible and that sounded, I would say, like shit, and I didn't realize that if I'd play bit slower things than I was capable of playing then everything would sound much better.

Just fastest? I don't really care... its about being fast AND interesting. Hell, I can sit there and sweep arpeggios, 16th triplets at well over 200 bpm.

But its boring, no one wants to hear it, and I certainly don't want to play it.

There are neoclassical guys like the above mentioned George Bellas, Rusty Cooley, etc..

But as far as being fast AND interesting I see either Shawn Lane or Marshall Harrison as tops in that category.

But yes, Angelo is lame, very lame.

And if only to put it down for once... yes Yngwie CAN play faster than Angelo. Don't check out his solo albums, even his latest one. Listen to say, his contribution to Derek Shereinian's newest solo album Black Utopia.

Of course I should also mention that Francesco Fareri, I believe, is not even human to begin with, so I don't think he should be counted.

Perhaps an elf or something magical like that.

And danny joe carter. I pretty sure he is not human either. I thought people like michael angelo could pick fast but after seeing some danny joe carter vids i realised there was a definate speed difference.
By virtue of their electrical properties, tubes generate a special waveform when they're saturated, which is why tube engineering has tremendous tonal advantages over solid state or DSP solutions, particularly for crunch and lead sounds. Tubes enter the saturation zone gradually or softly, which lends tube-driven tone its trademark yet totally unique character.

I think this has got to be the thread with the most replies ever, if not, it's up at the top of the list...
"You must stab him in the heart with the Bone Saber of Zumacalis... well, you could stab him in the head or the lungs, too... and the saber, it probably doesn't have to be bone, just anything sharp lying around the house... you could poke him with a pillow and kill him."

Has anyone said that kirk hammet is the fastest yet ? :)

Micheal Angelo Batio, to me, isn't only fast, but he takes a lot of his lines from the classical realm.

Fastestest guitarist I know personally is Rusty Cooley. I Talk to to guy every week. I know he isn't the fastest guitarist, but he is fast.
I can't help it. When I get an idea that excites me it's as if I can't breath unless I make it real.

Lets add Francesco farerri to the list: http://www.francescofareri.com
I started learning guitar because of Randy Rhoads..but Yngwie J. Malmsteen is my biggest influence.

I think this conversation should be guided towards the fastest LIVING guitarists or guitarists who STILL play. While it is important to recognize the great ones who've passed away or succumbed to illness (R.I.P Shawn Lane and poor Jason Becker), it would be more interesting to speculate on who the current fastest guitarist is. Although, it's more or less impossible to tell, unless each candidate played the exact same passage in a competition or something and we used slow-motion camera work to count the notes in a given time. And that, my friends, is ridiculous.

fastest =/= best

I disagree that fastest = best. What if you can play stuff at a blistering 10000000 bpm but at the same time you cant stay in tempo at 120 bpm...

What If you can play 100000 bpm and at the same time no nothing of scales or progressions and can only play the open E string?

What if you can play 1000000 bpm but can't hold a rhythm....

Well if I could do ANYTHING that fast, then I would be making some money whoring myself in the guiness book of world records.

Really though, fast complex and meaningful passages/licks/runs are not only impressive, but can really throw a shiver down your spine. If the musicianship dosn't excite me,the music probly wont either.

There is a lot of people who say 'so and so can say more with one note than a million notes by so and so'(yngwie himself too, about b.b king)but thats simply not true.

Technique should never be attained/practiced for the sake of technique. Its about having the capabilities to say anything you want with your instrument.Kinda like a tool...you can buy a super fancy table saw,but cutting through same old plywood will get tedious when theres so many different woods that can be cut and shaped...
