My Idol
Man oh man guys. What is guitar about these days? Is it who can go the fastest? or who can do the baddest sweep? I say froget that, it's all technical styling crap in my book. Guitar is about emotion, feeling what your doing on your guitar, not just trying to be the fastest. You guys wanna hear someone who personafies guitar listen to Slash. Listen to Sweet child o mine, One in a million, and Patience. He doesnt have to go fast to sound awsome. Yeah he can go fast as hell if he wants (Just listen to the hard version of reckless life) but he doesnt have to and I think he know it. Slash doesnt get near enough credit for being the guitar god he is. Just listen to the emotion he puts out and how he does it.

Everyone has a different idea of what makes a great guitarist. Some people like speed, some people like the alternative I can't really play approach. I personally like the emotionalness of Slash's playing. But I also have respect for the other sides to the guitar too. So it's a matter of each to their own.
To me playin guitar is about playin what I like to hear and like playin. Sometimes is speed metal, sometimes it's bluesy rock other times it's grunge or accoustic.

I like speed and grace, that's why Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson is probably my favourite. At his best (1976-84) there was plenty of fire in his playing but he had great melodic content and lots of breathing space. Listen to Exit Stage Left and Hemispheres by Rush, get 'em from a library or something. If you can't stand Geddy Lee's high voice then try the track "La Villa Strangiato", best rock instrumental ever? Maybe!
If I couldn't laugh at myself how could I laugh at someone less ridiculous?

Thank you guys for replying. I'm glad you were smart enough to know I wasnt trying to insult anyone. It's just all I've been hearing about lately is speed, and while speed is good, no one ever mentions emotion. Im glad to see there's still people out there who actually listen to what thair idol is doing instead of clocking every one to see who's fastest.

We can't claim that even the fastest shredheads like Michael Angelo can't play with emotion ... If somebody says so , then probably he just didn't understand that certain kind of music (no offense to anyone).
My two cents :
I don't think that Michael Angelo can make one of Slash solo's sound as good as Slash would do , and Slash can't make a Michael Angelo's solo sound as good as Angelo would do. (I don't just mean those two guys only of course)

To me, it seems almost impossible for anyone not to put emotion into their playing. I mean, just try it. Its pretty tough, so tough that I dont think any guiyarist would actually fall into a habit of doing it.
I think there are lots of stuff that make great guitarists, but my favorite qualities are technical skill, and by that I dont mean speed, tapping, etc, its how well you play what you play, and the feel of the song the artist creates. If a guitarist can make the guitar sound exactly the way he/she wants, then they are a good guitarist.

And God said, 'Let there be rock!'

A combination of speed and emotion are my thing. Playn fast get pretty boring pretty fast as well as playn´ slow and it´s like, nothing happends. But combine them two and walla, you got a solo to satisfy both shredders and others.
I like Zakk Wylde´s stuff and Petruccis (just to mention few). Those guy can really mix things. Slash is great too but he´s not much into shredding. That´s a minus. Yngwie is great too but he´s too much into shredding (but he can play blues/emotional stuff better than most) but seems afraid to do it.

You know, you guys are right. Slash may not be the fastest and he may not be the most emotional, but, there's just something about the way he plays, its unlike anything I've ever heard. It's just the way he writes his music, I mean the way he throws in bends and harmonics in the most awsome ways. He can take 4 notes, and bend them, and make them sound totally astounding, for example the harmonies in "Estranged", it's like he just cuts through all the other instruments with his guitar. I know overall Slash isn't the greatest guitarist, but to me, no one could ever top him.

It's not the way Slash writes , it's the way Slash plays ... And I agree that it's very special .

I wonder who wrote most songs (music) in GNR? My guess would be Izzy but I´m not sure.

Speaking of Jeff Beck, have anybody seen basketball movie called Blue Chips (Nick Nolte, Shaq, Afarnee Hardaway...)?
I´ve been wonderin´ what´s that song called when they are about to check out Shaq (when they are riding down the river. It goes somthing like Let Me No Go but it isn´t correct. That song is amazing, simply awsome and if anybody knows the name of the song, post it casu I want to learn it badly!!!

As far as I remember , Izzy & Axle were the main song writers , and Slash was mainly concerned with the lead guitar stuff plus some writings like "Sweet Child O'mine" (that one is my fav GNR , I got it's intro as my cell phone ring tone for over 2 years now !).

I have a GNR video where he plays totally wrong on Sweet Child bass intro. Pretty funny. But I like his bass lines a lot. I also like his bass sound and his voclas is great.

What I like most about his bass lines is that they are never boring as most other bass players.

Technique is not just about high-speed chops. Think of many of the classic riffs and most aren't played at warp 9. there's more feel in Dave Gilmour's solos like on 'Another brick in the wall', 'Shine on you crazy diamond' and 'Money' than in several albums' worth of crypto-classical shredding. That said, most of Satch's greatest riffs have been pretty awesome in terms of speed and feeling. I guess that's why he's a legend and most imitators aren't. Al di Meola once said that when he was young he wanted to be the fastest player on the planet but soon reaslied speed isnt the be all and end all.

AhA! i have another bottom line...like someone said, i think its impossible for anyone to play without emotion. some guy replied implying that Korn do...i don't think so.
Everyone plays with emotion, just not the same emotion. So many feelings govern our lives, why stick to just one? Perhaps the more emotions a guitarist plays with, the better he or she is, not only as a guitarist, but generally as a more rounded person. Just a thought...

Yeah, that´s right. Evryone plays with emotion otherwise they couldn´t play (our they could play but it would sound like a 2 years old kid is just hiting on guitar here and there).
I always find emotion in bending/slide and vibrato technique. But it´s damn hard to explain. That´s why I don´t think that shred is much of emotion, ´cause you ain´t got the time for things like this when you´re doing a 32-note run.
