I'm fairly new to this site and I've noticed alot of rock oriented musicians and some of that stuff I really like but I was wondering if there is a board here that caters to the discussion of the chicken picken country sounds of James Burton, Jerry Donahue,(not Phils brother), Brent Mason and Albert Lee. How about it for us old guys.

None of the boards are "reserved" or whatever for a certain genre of musicians.

Anyone who heard "Lord, Mr. Ford" when Jerry Reed released it, knows that country players were doin' super-fast licks long before the rockers were! :D

Thanks for the welcome Lordathestrings.
Yes pstring I did check out some of the stuff that Terry Couch has on this site. Some good stuff. I even found a tab for Tony Rice. I wish thier were more on Tony Rice. I have a hard time lifting his style from listening to the recordings and find the tabs really help.

Hey Terry, I'm a big fan of country style playing, Jerry Donahue, Arlen Roth, Danny Gatton, Pete Anderson,etc...

I attended a guitar clinic years ago with Arlen Roth that was amazing. I liked Danny Gattons style but to me his tones had little to desire. I always felt he got about the ugleist tones possible out of a tele. Out of the bunch you mentioned Jerry Donahue is my favourite, but I have a hard time finding any recordings by him. The closest I can come to a similar style is in my favourite country band Diamond Rio. Seen them live a couple of times and Jimmy Orlando simply amazed me each time. Probably he's my favourite guitar player

Have you heard much of the Derailers? I love the more traditional country/honkytonk sound, not much of a fan of contemparary country music, Nashville is major source of noise pollution these days.......

Hi Terry1960
I have/t been on here in months been a little busy but
your bringing back alot of memorys when you mention,
James and Albert.
I did start out in 1961 coping the JB style plus later
on in the 80s got into the albert lee style Ventures ect.
I alwasy thought JB was the the father of bending strings
useing bango strings .I still use the chicken picken style
in some stuff my band plays today.
Anymore we try to cover all styles which makes us work alot
more than other bands. Also i like the rock of today.
Did mess around with the Jerrys stuff but not alot.
I do use a b-bender on my tele plus droped D and G tunings
once in awhile.
I forgot to say i do use the pick and finger style.
I like jazz, blues, rock, southern, rock, and all the new stuff of today encluding the sweep picking styles rakeing ect.Anymore i get to do alot of improv in the band i play with now so after the main hook its go for broke i hate to copy songs or do cover songs .After we kick a song off so the people know what it is or they request it then its
adlib time for me.
My son keeps me up on the Rock of today.
I forgot to mention Guitar tricks has some great rock players up here that i've stole from .

Mark
keep picking but enjoy

i like blending that honky tonk and older rockabilly stuff in w/my hard rock/metal.

Although Country picking is what I'm good at I have nothing against ocasionally cranking up the stereo and listening to some heavier music. Some that come to mind are Van Halen and Steve vai. Some older guitarists like Dave Gilmour are favorites as well.

Don't just listen to these guys use bits and peices of
thier licks and add them into your country music.
I would hate to be labeled a country guitarest only!
I use alot of the rock licks bits and peices plus alot
of blues stuff in all my country.(I do use more blues today in my country music.
Thanks to the great Chet atkins&Jerry reed the country
guitarests of today don't just play i lost my dog country
music or chicken pick only.

Expermenting with all styles and putting
them in your style is the way to go in
country music today.
I've used from clapton to santana in alot
of country music plus on brooks&dune
tunes ive stuck in licks from little
wing JH and Srv licks.ect

(Don't belive in labeling myself a
country picker i love to play all
styles of music.
I would rather be called just a
(Guitarest)

Mark( still learning and will never
stop experimenting with other
Styles.

Fortunately, playing in the country venue has allowed me to be able to experiment and develop a unique style. I've also played in rock cover bands and the expectation was always lick for lick exactly from the recording. In country bands the encouragement was always improvise and add our own input. I've never been very good at lifting licks from the album so I always did incorporate licks with my own interpretation. Although, no matter how progressive I play(ie:incorporating Van-Halen style licks in to country songs) I'll probably never get away from the label of country guitarist as for the last 15 years I've played almost exclusively in country bands.

Really you can get away with throwing alittle harder rock
plus blues ect into your show or where ever you play!
But your band has to know more than just country to
pull it off.
If you give the old die hard country listeners what they
want at the place your playing then you can throw in the
hard rock ect my band is not labled country .
And i'm not labeled a country guitarest.
Now as far as you playing cover rock songs note for note
you don't have to do that we don't but we can but that would be boreing to me and my band if we could'nt jam.
I will say i'm lucky my band can play other styles and
pull the hard-rock plus blues stuff off to a 80% country
crowd, but the trick is do all the requests they want then
do your rock stuff then they will forget about the country unless you try to throw to much heavy music as you say
at them. And it dos help having a good MC to talk at them
when you do your thing.
