If you are including best continued artists over the year you should include Stix, Heart and Pat Benatar. I have seen them recently and they were all awesome. Of course Pat Benatar still looks great!
Most talented band ever?
Beatles.

Wow. No way to answer this question because so many great bands all have different strengths. But I'll say a couple of my favorites are Weather Report, Dire Straits & Pink Floyd.

Tortoise. Probably a new one to most; but to me they can do no wrong. Peep out this video.

Probably showing my age here..oh well, in 1974 I saw Joe Walsh, Marshall Tucker and introducing Lynyrd Skynyrd. The original Skynyrd band was the most amazing band to see live. Ronnie Van Zandt had such a stage presence that he actually dominated the show over 3 amazing guitar players. Another real good guitar player was Toy Caldwell of Marshall Tucker fame. Sad story with his and his brother passing on so young.
in all honesty I don't think there is a best band. There are so many talented musicians out there and some on this website that to pick one would be a very hard thing to do. Take care and have fun, John

I have to go with the Beatles as well. Maybe not the most technically skilled band, but I think their talent in a broader sense (creativity, innovation, etc.) is hard to match. Individually they were pretty kick ass too - as a guitar player, I just marvel at some of George's guitar work.

Dunno I didn't read every post but my personal choices.
ZZ Top for being a 3 piece act and sounding like a much larger group.
White Stripes for being a 2 piece act and having a full sound to their live music as well as recorded. Jack White played a plastic Montgomery Wards guitar for almost 10 years they made music.

Ok this kinda a dumb question all bands have bad days and good days I am sure even the great Jimi Hendrix sounded like crap a couple of times in his career and some people heard it once on that day and then said he was horrible and I know there are bands that are better than all of those bands that you mentioned that do not have any fame because they came out at the wrong time like now thaere are bands that have great drummers guitarists bassists singers that do not have fame because they are not pretty boys I am just saying there are some people real talent out there that are not known at all. And there are some bands out there that are famous that have minimal talent. But I am really into the older Metalica like everything up to the Black Album after that they still sounded good but not as good as they were. Also, AC/DC IS AWSOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ROCK ON!!!!!!!!

I think The Eagles and Dream Theatre, like others have said. Oh, and Boston, when Brad Delp was living.

Im a fan of King's X. They are progressive but still accessible. Great vocals, gutiar, drums, bass and writing.

Ok, I must admit I haven't read through the whole of this thread but seeing the post about Tortoise as recommended by Douglas, it just so took me back to the days of Soft Machine. I was a young idiot at the time but this band really got me into the jazz rock fusion thing.

I just had to search through my seldomly played CD's and I found the double album "Strange Fruit" which must be worth a bloody fortune by now!

Checked out the videos. I don't quite see the similarity between Soft Machine and Tortoise, but I don't think that was your intention. However, I can appreciate the post as it is nice to see something absent from the norm. As much as I love the classics, my main musical influences are a bit eccentric and bands like Tortoise really resonate with me based on their good musicianship and their DIY spirit. Here are a few links to some live recordings.

I enjoyed the Soft Machine videos. Very jazz fusion indeed and I am a much bigger fan of that era of fusion that of what is current. Weather Report, Brand X, Return to Forever; that is my business.
Thanks for the post!

Douglas, if you like things that vary wildly from the norm with a fusion and Soft Machine connection, try this.

I had a vinyl copy of the album but it got badly warped by a "friend" whom I lent it to.
However, I did acquire an MP3 copy from sonewhere.
