In terms of sheer virtuosity I'll say Dream Theater, but if im going to go with my gut feeling when I first saw the list of factors to take into account I'll say Zepellin.

Well, thanks to you reading the entire thread I had to as well. Good stuff to pass the layover time to :)
It's better to regret something that you have done than something you haven't.

Huge Dream Theater fan here. Amazing musicians.
However, I'm not giving them the nod. I think I'm going to back up a decade and go for Rush.

Lets not forget, Rush was a HUGE influence on Dream Theater. Dream Theater does with 5 people that Rush does with 3. Alex is one of the most under talked about guitarist.. Sad, because he is amazing.

I'll say Cream of course you have Clapton but Jack Bruce is an amazing vocalist/bassist combination and Ginger was an incredible drummer

Daniel Johnston Because all he had was heart and talent and little to no skill. And even lacking that essential ingredient he was capable of writing music that is more substantial and meaningful than most musicians can write.
But it's kind of a ridiculous Question anyway.

If you're looking at current "new" bands I would say Mars Volta should be considered.
Dream Theater are amazing musicians but I find them cheezy.

Steely Dan.

Always top notch playing even if primarily studio musicians. Still, deeps grooves and something I think is always key, tasty (and tasteful) playing.

Sorry maybe cheezy was the wrong word... Corny Maybe?
I don't know if it's thier singer or thier style but TO ME it sounds like cheezy corn or corny cheez, which ever is cheezier or cornier that what they are.... to me.
If anyone is interested in a badass band check out Godspeed, very provocative stuff.

I've just ploughed my way through 17 pages here and have found no mention of the BEATLES!!!!
They were talented musicians (well three of them, anyway) and their song writing and innovative work was second to none.
They started out nearly 50 years ago and finished nearly 40 years ago yet their music still stands up today.

I agree about The Beatles but not about only three of them being talented - a good musician fits in with the style of the music being produced and on most of their music Ringo (I presume it is him that you mean) fits really well.
The early Beatles were a great live band and having a good drummer is part of that - it's all about feel and not technique IMHO

That's a tough one. 'Talent' can be musical, performance, emotional..blah blah blah. I'm big on Van Halen and Ac/Dc but I gotta say Earth, Wind & Fire - they always amaze me on a bunch of levels and they always have an infectious good mood charge.

Love EW&F. Hard to have a down day with them on. I think the kind of depth in composition they require to do that so well is a little missed amongst rock guys. Instead of a guitar driving everything, it's a different mindset with each instrument needing to take its place in the arrangement.

...and seriously, how can this not make your day better:

Hallelujah, my brother! That's my #1 choice for pick me up songs and one of my all time favorites in general. I grew up with The Best Of Earth, Wind & Fire Vol. I (1978) and it would def be one of my top choices of albums to have if stuck on a deserted island. :D

The Allman Brothers without a doubt. TWO amazing drummers, Jaimo and Butch coupled with the most under rated bass player, Berry Oakley set the rhythm. Gregg at vocals and Hammond organ and for songwriting. Dicky Betts for jazz/country licks...and of course the greatest slide man ever Duane. That's a ton of talent.

I think three successful solo careers (Walsh, Henley and Frey) and a huge number of Eagles songs speak for themselves, IMO. No matter what kind of music fan you choose to call yourself, you can find something to like in the Eagles library.
