I'm in full agreement except for the "catchy" bit. Oh, and the "4 min." part.

Yeah, I downloaded some songs of theirs yesterday, and I didn't like them a whole lot. Of the 5 I downloaded, there was only one I liked, "Fly me to the Glass Moon" or something like that. I guess I'm gonna have to stick with Led Zeppelin.

It's gotta be Queen... nobody can make a construct a song as well as them. Every note of every song seems thoughtful and well organized, including the solos.

For improvisation, no-one will ever match Ornette Coleman. I mean, okay, he's not even a guitarist, but in terms of music in general, I'd rather listen to him than Liquid Tension Experiment or Dream Theatre any day. If we're talking in guitar-rock terms, I think Phish trump Liquid Tension Experiment for improvisational skill. Trey Anastasio is a much more engaging and entertaining improviser than John Petrucci.

Having seen Trey in a purely improvisational environment (Oysterhead's first performance mid-way through "Harold of the Rocks" at a Primus concert in Burlington, VT) and having heard his rehearsed material from Phish and Oysterhead (which is, actually, relatively structured), I'm skeptical of this.

I'm by no means a Petrucci fan, but I've seen what happens when Trey and two other people are making it all up on the spot and (to put it mildly) the results are horrid.

When it comes to being a "more engaging and entertaining improvisor," I can't tell you where Petrucci stands relative to Trey Anastasio, but I can tell you that relative to Larry LaLonde, Trey is outclassed by a very large margin.

Yeah, you kind of have to listen to the albums in their entirety. One song at a time doesn't really do them justice.

they have a different goal with writing their songs than other bands. Most bands want a screaming audience that headbangs and moshpits. DT wants a more educated, music based audience that will sit down with their eyes closed. Thats why all their songs are so different from other bands.

I reckon its Pink Floyd, Rush...perhaps King Crimson...and I know they are not quite up there...but The Mars Volta are kings of tomorrow.

True that, double true.
Als, I used to HATE them the first time I heard them, but now I own all their cd's and dvd's and am hoping so see them in march.

Also, listen to 'hourglass' by liquid tension. It was a last minute guitar and piano piece, just amazing.

I'm really confused now..............that's like saying Dead Meadows has great guitarists.

My vote would have to be the short lived Derek and the Dominoes with
Blind Faith a close second.

Call me ignorant, but who is Dead Meadows?

Once again, I see no mention of Tool. They are an awesome band and this is due to the input of all members - they are a true band in this sense.
Maynard James Keenan is an amazing vocalist, with a phenomenal range of emotions in his voice - I can't think of a better vocalist.
Danny Carey is just the finest drummer out there, technically he is something else, but he never shows off - everything is done to drive the song.
Justin Chancellor is a great bassist, so heavy.
Adam Jones is a brilliant guitarist. He is not flashy, plays virually no solos, but his toneis fantastic, and he is just so heavy (in thetrue sense of the word, not in fast, thrashy sense). I love shred and general guitar wankery, but when it comes to sheer power, he can't be beaten.
There. Does anyone care to challenge this opinion?

You know who's talented? The frickin' Doors.
You go outside and practice screaming. We'll play music while you're gone.

GREEN DAY! j/k ;)
Later in the evening
As you lie awake in bed
With the echoes from the amplifiers
Ringing in your head
You smoke the day's last cigarette
Rememb'rin' what she said
