Adding Two Notes On the High E-String

In the previous tutorial we explored how you can change up which treble strings you use for this pattern, and that comes in very handy when we're trying to work in melodies.

It's funny how you can probably play this part much more easily when you think of it as one complete part, but as soon as you single out a melody like this, there's a good chance it messes up the pattern. But that's a big part of the exercise here- to train your brain and your fingers to be able to focus on the melody notes on the treble strings, while automatically keeping the “accompaniment” going underneath it.

In Chapt 2, Finger picking "The Mechanics", Anders suggests using the 3rd finger for the high E string. Above in same Chapt. "Adding two notes on the high E string" he suggests using the 2nd finger for the high E. Is there a correct or a more preferred finger to use all or most of the time on the high E string?

Hello and thanks for your question! There isn't a "more or correct" finger to use on the high E string - it all depends on the musical context. Sometimes the 3rd finger makes the most sense based on the fingerpicking pattern and the notes that come before and after. In other situations, the 2nd finger will make the most sense. Hope this helps!
