You definitely want a guitar with humbucker pickups for this song. Killswitch Engage does a fabulous job of incorporating chords normally used in jazz into a heavy rock format. This combined with the drop tuning and a driving groove makes for a very melodic and heavy sound.
The clean guitar part uses alternate picking. The distorted guitar uses downstroke picking with palm muting.
