I've been having an argument with my friends over the fact that I can shred or not. I've been playing guitar for less than a year but I'm still quite good (my own opinion).

I would like some comformation from others.

heres some advice..NOT so much distortion..its nearly impossible to hear what you playing and second work on playing cleaner..shredding is no good if its sloppy
i say put more emotion into it but overall its good

That's a decent sound clip, but yeah, you need moderate overdrive, not heavy distortion. The playing is rather sloppy, and seems unfocused in the latter third of the clip. If you want to hear great Blues shredding, try Gary Moore, perhaps "Pretty Woman" or fora bit more melodic piece, try "Still Got The Blues" - both contain quality blues shredding. I say you're good for playing about a year, but there's a lot of room for improvement. Keep at it. Also, what your friends might consider shredding might be different than what you consider shredding. Very few people consider blues riffs, even fast, shredding. They're looking for more three note per string alternate picking metal riffs.

If that's shredding, then I guess I can shred, too! Yippee!
... and that's all I have to say about that.

oii.. yeah dude - work on your basics and master some slow stuff first. youĀ“re trying to play somewhere on the 17th floor whilst you are lacking the basement. that building wont be very stable.

Dude ,your guitar tone su*ks , you definately need lower gain ... Can't judge your technique fairly though , but like the others , I think it's pretty sloppy & unfocused.

Let your primary goal be accuracy & precision , speed will come naturaly by time.

Your quick, but it also sounds like your just randomly going up the scale as fast as you can. Also your distortion is disquising alot of your sloppiness, play it on a clean or acoustic guitar. A heavy distorted guitar is not the best way to practice technique. Other than that, for playing less than a year you have some talent and good potential but you need to work on your precision and basics. Only play what you can play well, especially for other people to judge. ;)

Obvoiusly there's a youngster/newbie here, attempting to acquire enough 'chops to display. Thanx' for sharing, but there's some very good advice offered:
...good potential but you need to work on your precision and basics. Only play what you can play well, especially for other people to judge...

...Let your primary goal be accuracy & precision , speed will come naturaly by time...

...work on your basics and master some slow stuff first...

The idea that you have to play violently fast-n-furious to be "good" has become a poisoning infiltrator of today's younger guitar players.

If you work on what's really important like, clarity in your expression, sustaining notes, clear melodic lines, well intonated vibrato and such; you'll see how soon you start receiving "respect" from other players/listeners.

There's potential there (for what little I heard), your heart's in the right place, and you have my applause & admiration that you're practicing. You'll be good enough to play a lot of things in the future, Just don't let your desire to play fast hinder your ability to play well.

One (important) reason I can play very fast, and very accurate,
is that I took the time to PRACTICE SLoooooowww...

GOOD LUCK BRO'! I WISH YOU THE BEST!

WAY less distortion dude! I love a lot of gain man, but that's way way way too much! You did get pretty sloppy towards the end. The beggining was fairly clean, but overall it seemed pretty directionless. You've got speed in your fingers, but the tune needs to be in your head or else your speed will work against you. Practice SLOWLY! As JSV said. (Apparently I can shred really well and didn't know it, I just figured I was playing kind of fast).

In answer to your question, though, yes, you can shred. However, you didn't do it very accurately in that clip. But practice makes perfect, you're definitely not bad, you just need work.

All hope's gone. My dreams are shattered. I'm just gonna sit in the corner and cry.

Ha, just joking.

It's obvious to see, or hear, that I was trying to play too fast for what I can handle. I'm only in my first year and never had and lessons or really any direction other than learning tabs for songs.

Yesterday I bothered to listen to Michael Angelo, Yngwie and Chris Impellitteri so now I know what shredding really is.

It's clear to see from all the responses that it takes a sh*t load of practice, and practicing the right way to shred. I just finished my last day of school today with 2 and half months of holidays ahead fo me so I'll take the advice given and at every chance practice, practice, practice. Then, hopefully, I'll be going the right way about playing guitar.

Thanks for all the responses.

Oh my less than a year and he got that far... what's in the stuff you anglo saxons eat. I do respect the fact you have worked (very hard, i assume) to train your fingers to become that fast, but like many have already said you gotta tone the thing down few notches. If your technique is truely is a work of art, then you'll hear the same **** even with less dist. Once you're playing with clearer tone you will notice that you weren't playing properly and the people listening to you will definitely notice it and will start to die in agony. The above post about sustain and vibratos etc... that's all true. You have to pay attention to each note.

So bear in mind, you gotta be critical about your technique or you will be embrassed to play in front of many people. I've exprienced this and I tell you, it wasn't a good feeling. LOL

BTW what did you do during your practice sessions, I'm curious to know. Are you also one of those 10 hrs per day type of guy?
