Les is a cool player - remember him in the old Cheech and Chong "Up in Smoke" - they were in the battle of the bands.
Hey lets give Billy Sheehan his due...

also Steve Harris
Joey de Maio (i think that's how you spell it)
Mike Lepond (symphony x)
To improve technique and of course trying to keep all as clean as possible. I know my own limits and speed limits and so on I never play anything I'm not capable of. That wouldn't make any sense. After three years of playing I tried to play everything as fast as possible and that sounded, I would say, like shit, and I didn't realize that if I'd play bit slower things than I was capable of playing then everything would sound much better.

My idea of a great B3 (thinking of who would woirk best together) would be.....FLEAAAAA! Stu Hamm & John Myung. As For the guy that said flea isn't all that good?! well screw you! only joking,i know what you mean, he's not technically the best, but his basslines are the best!

That guy is actually pretty solid too (saw them open for Primus before they were huge, and they actually did a pretty good job). I was thinking more along the lines of Fieldy from Korn (because he's sloppy, basicly mirrors the guitar parts, has the worst bass tone I've ever heard in my life, and to add insult to injury, whines about being famous). I've got nothing against anybody who actually holds down the bottom and plays a few interesting fills from time to time, even if they use a pick and play in psuedo-punk bands.

Actually i think all those "best whatever" are not realy usefull - apart from the fact that everyone has his own personal hero from whom he thinks he is the best on the planet - the fact is that the stuff you hear from most of those dudes is just a small glimpse of what they actually can do on their instrument. its just what the music demands. a mindboggling fast and adventurous bass-line would just not fit into a slowplaying band. Also i´m quite sure that even dudes like john myung are not showing all of their skill - if he gives 70% its enough by far.

does anyone here think that fieldy is a great bassist? he's the bassist for KoRn. he's got crazy technique and he writes good bass lines. Fieldy and Flea are my favorite bassists.
good stuff.
Thanks for listening to this small piece of me.

I think I would have to agree with Azrael - sometimes the mark of true skill lies in knowing when NOT to play your instrument - so it can be hard to judge the ability and/or talent of a given artist simply by the band or music that they currently play. Although, I do have to give props to Les Claypool - that man can play some seriously wicked Sh!t.

hey man,
fieldy might not be as good all these bassists but he loves what he does and he does it well, even if it's not expert level technique. it's all good.
Thanks for listening to this small piece of me.

I feel the same way. Some of his stuff is really good, and some of it is generic. But he is one of the best slappers out there.

Since I'm a moderator in this forum, I really hate to criticize here. Well, I hate to criticize anywhere because there's always other ways at looking at things. I'm usually of the opinion that there is always another perspective on any given issue and it's probably just as right as mine.

But Fieldy is pretty bad. I've heard a few live bootlegs of him playing out of time (and entirely too high in the mix), 90% of what he does mirrors the guitar part, all of it is basic, and I'm personally of the opinion that a bass guitar should not sound like an out of tune snare drum. Then, to top it all off, he whines about how tough it is to be a rock star. These are only a few of the reasons he made Bob C. C ock's "Simply Must Be Boiled Alive in Urine" list.

If his sound/style apeals to you, I won't argue because it's personal taste and that's something I hold sacred. I have a tattoo that I'm planning that perfectly demonstrates this point (the thing is so uber-white-trash that I've fallen in love with it, and EVERYBODY hates it making me love it that much more). But in virtually all conventional measurments of a good bassist - phrazing, overall solidness, tone, and technical ability... Fieldy stanks. Flea, to make another famous example is kinda sloppy, but his phrazing, tone, stage presence, and overall funkyness make up for it and then some.
