That stupid Yahoo page is taking forever to post messages, so I vote we start using a thread here to keep in touch.

In other news, the backing track is almost done! All I have to do is record the rhythm guitar part. Do you still want to do vocals, Ed? I also think we should get James to lay down the solo/lead. So what do you say James? You seem to have some pretty mad skillz in that department.

Yeah... some times it just wont let more log in for no perticular reason...
I'll do "vocals"... um...
I'll put the tab up for the arabic chord progression...
um... I'm working on my own stuff. So i can do some work on the backing track when it's uploaded.

Yo Ed? . . . are ya dead? (j/k)

If you're having trouble logging in to that Yahoo page, I think I figured out a workaround. Before you type in the URL (or click your fav icon for it) go in and delete any yahoo cookies that are on your HD. Any thing in the temporary internet files folder that says cookie:yourname@yahoo, delete it. Then log on to the page and sign in.

HIYA! LOL.. I got back from manchester last night... I was away yesterday and the day before... so i didn't have a chance to do anything...
Upload the early version of the backing track, so we can have a listen to it... so we have a rough idea of things, and maybe even get some work started...

Ok. I posted a link to that blues thing, just to placate you guys for the time being. But I'll go ahead and post a link to the existing track. Like I mentioned on the group page, I don't like the chorus chord progression. I'm gunna change it a bit before I declare the track "final".

I know you guys are gonna edit this post out, and you should, but will you post the song once it's final.

I`m kinda very interesting in listening to the song of the all-star team of Guitartricks :)

Sorry about butting in the conversation...

LOL

We'll probably make that decision once the track is done. ;)

Sh*t sorry about my absence from the group guys, I thought the yahoo thing kind of disbanded! I'll check it out today. Yeah I'd love to do the lead... mad skills? Hmm... I don't know about that, but I'll give it a shot!

Just downloaded Cadre Backing, it's cool! Love the percussion and synth especially. Those first tritone jumps are EVIL! Is this the one that I would have a solo for? I heard something about a blues thing as well.

Mmmmmmm . . . tritones . . . Lol

Yeah, that's the one, although I'm going to redo the verse (the part that comes right after the intro "tritones") to make it a little more manageable. I don't know if you've tried to solo over it yet, but it's impossible. To come up with anything that sounds decent you have to modulate just about every measure. So that was my fault . . . *sheepish grin* I'm gunna start redoing it today and tomorrow.

Once Ed gets some vocal stuff worked out we can construct your solo around that. Cool?

Re: Mad skills - yup, lol. I listened to that song you uploaded a while ago to the group. It sounded great.

Yeah, there's a link to a blues backing track up there too. It was what Skee soloed over for our first ever collab. Maybe everyone can contribute a measure's worth of solo to it or something. We can have you, Skee, and I all trading off solos. That'd be tight.

Great idea about the blues thing, taking turns each measure sounds cool. Where can I download the blues stuff? I didn't see it in the "Files" part.

Yeah those tritones are tough to work with. I'm not that familiar with them. I tried C dimished over it and C dominant phrygian and it sounded, well, ok, but not fantastic, you know?

Try F# lydian over the tritones.

About the blues thing - yeah, the files area wasn't working yesterday. It would get about half way through the upload and then the server would time out. So anyway, I put it up on my website. There should be a link to it in my "Saturday!!!!" post.

Ok . . . I posted version 2.0 of the backing track. I'm probably gunna end up changing some things with the drums, but it should give you guys plenty to work with.

Let me know what you come up with. By the way, I didn't put it in the files section, but there's a link to it in my second Apr22 post. There's also a text file explaining the whole thing.

I got the new version, its great man. A couple questions:

1) How did you do the drums, bass, and synth? They sound really good and I can't get anything like that when I try and use Cakewalk Sonar. Basically, how did you put this thing together?

2) I need to do some more ear-training I guess. What are the chords for my jam section? The basic tonality seems to revolve around A lydian at first (1:57 to 2:13), then stays in A lydian but varies slightly until 2:21 (correct?), then finishes off in E minor. Is this right? Could you tell me what specific chords are being used?

Oh yeah one more thing, how did you do that awesome sitar?! Do you actually own one?

The synth, drums, bass, and sitar were all done in Fruity Loops 3. Great program . . . extreme learning curve, but well worth its weight in gold. I recorded the guitar and mixed everything in ACID, and then did some tweaking and compression in Sound Forge.

There are some parts of the drum beat I'm not happy with so far (I need to make the transitions smoother), but I can fix all that when I do a final mix with you and Ed's stuff.

01:57 - 02:28, did you get my "song map"? . . . the first part goes E5maj7, E5, F#5maj7th, F#5. I don't really know what to play over this part. I'd try some tapping or some E major and F# major arpeggios. (doesn't really matter as long as it sounds totally balls out) Then it goes to the add9 chords - A5add9, B5add9, G5add9. The G will give you a bit of a problem here, but A lydian still sounds fine. Then it goes between E5 and C5. (obvious choice, E minor)

So the whole thing goes -

E5maj7, E5, F#5maj7th, F#5 (repeat)
A5add9, B5add9, A5add9, B5add9, G5add9 (repeat)
E5, C5 (repeat x4)

By the way, don't feel that you have to confine yourself just to that part for your solos. We'll see what Ed comes up with, and then have you fill in the gaps.

Cool, thanks. Yeah I saw the song map, but I wanted to know exactly what the chords were. It's a very nice composition, btw.

Another question: how will I go about recording the solo for it? I have Cakewalk Sonar. Would I import the whole song into and then lay my solo down, and send it back?

Well, this is why I was trying to get everyone to use ACID. You could record your solos in separate tracks and then send them to me along with the sfx files that ACID makes automatically. The sfx files hold all the synchronization data for each individual track, so all I would have to do would be to import your solo. It would already be all synched up, so I could just adjust the levels and wala.

I've never used that Sonar program, so does it multitrack? If so, all you have to do is record your solo in a separate track and then send it. But you'll have to give me a time index so I have some idea of where to synch it up with the backing track.

Maybe we can come up with a better way of doing this, but with ACID it would be a snap. Without those sfx files synching up different files is kind of a trial and error thing.

Yeah Sonar can multi-task. It's much like ACID I believe. The only thing is, I have to hear the backing track as I'm recording, ya know?

Can you bring in the mp3 backing track as a separate track in Sonar? Does it let you play and record at the same time?

hmm.... I KNOW you can if dealing with .wav, I'm not entirely sure about mp3 but I'll check. So what would happen in that event would be that I would add my track, re-compress it, encode, all that junk, then send it back. Concievably it should be exactly the same with my part added. Concievably :)

I'm not a recording or software guru by any means...
