Yeah, you can use Winamp, or some other program, to convert the backing mp3 to wav. Then after you record your solos you can convert them to mp3 for transfer. Make sure you encode at 44Khz though. And do it at a high bitrate (160 or above).

HIYA.. sorry that i've been away... I've actaully started working on my guitar biulding project again...
I'll do some work on the vocals (I've not yet heard the backing track... I'm downloading it as i type this).
Why dont we let the whoe thing be spontanous, just let who wants to do what ever do whatever... I mean for example there was a dance record that came out last year that had a very cool vocal that "echoed" the guitar part... and things like that would have to be done as we go along (if i was to do them).
Am i allowed to put some guitar on there?

Spontaneous? I don't know if that would work. Maybe on our next project . . . lol. I can just give you guys a track with drums. Rask can record whatever bassline he wants (if he's still interested in the whole collab thing), and then we'll just pass it around and people can just do whatever they want.

But for now, let's try to stick to a plan. Feel free to work on some guitar stuff too, but James is going to have the majority of the solo stuff. You know what I'd like to hear though? . . . on the bridge, after the sitar fades out and the slow bongos start up, I'd love to hear some middle eastern-type voice stuff. You know those dominant phrygian voice inflections that they always do?

lol... cool, i'll do some arabic stuff on there...
to be honest, I never conciously use modes... I'm still new with them, and i find it much easier to get around just using them by ear rather than working out...
Anyhoo, I'm working on it as i type this... and It's not at easy as i imagined... I'm dreaming up some lyrics, and i keep getting images of some medevil army decending on a town (cos of the march like drums)... it's quite restrictive, but it's quite inspiring at the same time...
The little jam part made me smile... cos all i could hear was me going "ooowheeehooowheeehooowhee", beach boys style all over it... lol
I got the song map...
thanks for the good work..

So I got the track imported into Sonar and am ready to start recording over it! I don't know how long it will take (I'm kind of a perfectionist). I don't know how good the sound quality will be, I'm not good at mixing.

I'm a bit of a perfectionist myself, so I completely understand . . . take your time. :)

When you get your track recorded, don't mix it down. Send your solo track to me with a time index. That way I can synch it up, adjust the levels, and mix it down directly into ACID.

Ok, cool. What's a time index though, and how do I get one to you?

Well, when you're multi-tracking like we are, time indexes are what synch everything up. So if you consider that the beginning of my backing track is time 00:00, then the time index for your track will be whenever you start playing. If you have the cursor at 02:30 when you start recording your solo, then that would be when I have to put it in for mixing (or else it would sound jacked up). You see what I'm saying?

Well, with ACID, it's all in a file, but . . .

hmm... well. I finished the solo for the first part (the E5maj7 F#5maj7). I'm happy with it... It's not terribly inspired but it gets the job done. Now I'm trying to come up with something for the A5add9 B5add9 G5add9 part. That one's tougher! Hopefully it will be done soon though. Sorry it's taking so long, I haven't been able to put as much time into this as I would want because there's a lot going on right now but hopefully it will be done by mid-next week.

I got time to post a quick apology:
Dear freinds/ colleges/ and hangers on
I appologies for the fact that i (ali ebrahim) have not done my f-ing vocal part yet. This has been due to being very busy with other projects (building guitar/ buying tools for building guitar/ cuircuit diagrams for biulding guitar/ arrested for urinating in public).
I know that such excuses are not good enough, however, all i ask is a little patients... cos I dont want to put down loads of uninspired "ooh" and "ah"s... though good lyrics aren't spilling from my head at the mo... but I'll restart work tommorow or the day after... (tommorow I've got to pick up a truss rod, and also something to sharpen the blade of a "jack plain").
I appologise again for the delay in my contribution, and hope that this will not come between us (as for the hangers on, I cannot say so truthfully).
Your's Grovelingly
A. Ebrahim (aka Educatedfilm, Aka gimmemyhashback)

If you have a melody and just need lyrics, I have some I could probably loan you for this.

Email or IM me.

A lydian is a shoe-in for that part. It sounds totally spacey over the add9s. If you're having trouble with the G, you could try switching to a whole tone scale . . .

P.S. After we see what Ed comes up with, we may have you record some more transition solos to fill in the spaces.

LOL . . . are you serious? Oh well, you've gotta expect the unexpected with musicians.

Rasky - are you still interested in participating in a collab? Once we finish this one, I could whip up a drum beat and send it to you. Then you can lay down one of your killer bass lines and send it back. We were talking about doing something like that, where everybody just passes a track around and adds whatever they want.

I have no practial means of recording myself as of yet. I'd have to borrow Seth (my former guitarist's) PortaStudio to do it... My computer has no audio in. I'd have to get a USB, FireWire, or PCI based solution of some kind. Kind of annoying since Coaster only needs an audio in, I own a decent Mic, and both of my heads have Low-Z outs - I just can't get it to the computer yet.

I am still planning on making a drum and bass groove and turning one or two of you guitarists loose on it, but I never seem to quite get around to doing it. Since I'm pretty bored today, I think I'll give it a try.

Also, I'm trying to find lyrics that would fit the vibe of the particular song here...

Anyone got a URL to the track so I can download it?

Go to the Yahoo group, and click on my post that says 'Backing 2.0' or something like that. There's a link to it in there.
