I just heard about a simple modification that makes a lot of sense to do to a cabinet.

Think about it, they say that the bigger the speaker cable is that runs from your amp head to the cabinet, the better. Less resistance, right? Well, take a look inside the cab and the wires that are going from the input of the cab to the speakers are the little wires that look like they should be connected to a nine volt battery, like the wires in a stompbox. I'm gonna replace those wires in my cab with some serious speaker wire and see what happens. I've heard that it makes a world of difference, actually more volume, better tone, etc......I know Marshall and Mesa uses these small wires, not sure about others....

I'll let you all know what happens. And if anyone else has heard about this or has tried it, let me know your experience with it....

That's probably a good Idea. It won't mess with your impendence will it?

No, replacing the speakers wires inside the cab won't affect the Impedence.

Oh, and when I do the mod, I'm gonna actually solder the wires to the speakers instead of using those little clips..

I'll do it. Learned the mod from a sound engineer here in my area. He said they were recording a band called Enable Kain and they brought 5 cabinets with them. The Engineer said that his modded cab would be all they would want to use. They recorded a track with each cab and only used the modded cab after that, then paid the engineer to do the mod to their cab's.

I'll let you know how it works out...

While you're at it, apply some heat-shrink tubing to the connections to add some strain-relief. Heavy wires can break the connections after a few years of loading in and out of gigs. Also, don't get carried away with your choice of wire size. For cab internal wiring, AWG #16 is plenty. Twin-lead lamp cord works just fine.

Every cab I keep for any length of time gets nice fresh wiring. Be careful when you solder onto the speaker tabs. To much heat for too long a time can damage the wires going to the voice coils.

Cool, thanks for that advice....

I haven't heard a modded cab (that I know of) personally....So, does it make a huge difference, or just subtle?

I just do it for reliability, but you could argue that by minimizing the impedance between the amp and the speaker(s), you give the amp more control over the speaker, 'tightening' the sound. Certainly that becomes an important issue with bass rigs that drive a kajillion Watts into 2-Ohm systems.
