I just do it for reliability, but you could argue that by minimizing the impedance between the amp and the speaker(s), you give the amp more control over the speaker, 'tightening' the sound. Certainly that becomes an important issue with bass rigs that drive a kajillion Watts into 2-Ohm systems.
