The overwhelming distances of space travel may be just too much ...

Lets assume all hospitable planets in the area are 6,000,000,000 light years away. The light has taken that long to reach out super hubble #5 scope. We can then date the planet to at least 6 billion years old.a few thousand years later and our bags are packed and convoy ready to go.We sail off into space towards our new planet around half the speed of light,so the trip will take roughly 12,000,000,000 years(use the bathroom now before we leave!)...our prospect planet is now at least 18,000,000,000 years old.The result would most likley be...

We arrive and find the planet without atmosphere or life..ah well, lets go home...we would arrive back just in time to see our sun swallow the earth.

With current technology, that is a problem. However who knows what the future may bring ! Did Watson and Crick envisage DNA microarrays ?

Einstein has been quoted as saying that if he had known where E=MC^2 was going he'd of become an accountant !

No,but it seems we have tapped the extent of 'applicable' and 'practical' technology...Flight wasn't anything new 500 years ago,it just had not been attempted succesfully..we just learned to apply its science and incorporate it into our daily lives...its nothing astounding.

We are all stuck in each others red tape now and things are advancing way too slow. The progress of nanomachines is taking way too long for example.Where is the momentum?

And computers do they not continue to get faster ?

No one is developing a more efficient car or light bulbs that burn out faster ??

Faster stronger more efficient means of using fuel and alternative sources of energy are not being developed ?

They used to say things exactly like that in Victorian times and look how far we've come since then.

With scientific knowledge progressing exponentially, how can we say that things are advancing way too slow?

You sure they said things like that in victorian times?

I'm not saying new things can't be founded or realized, but it seems we are leveling off so to speak...in 500 years from now, computers will no doubt be incorporated into absolutley everything and be blazing fast and super small and nano machines might be breaking down cancer cells e.c.t. but we still wont be out of our own mess.

I want space colonies and tera-formed planets damnit not a 9,000 GHz intel pentium processor!

Here's a line of thought to keep you awake at nights...

With the trends in AI, 'smart' prosthetics, and nanotechnology, it's reasonable to contemplate the possibility that mankind's next evolutionary transition will be from Homo Sapiens to Homo Technicus, to Homo Cyberus. At some point, our search for replacement parts will lead us to become more and more a constructed entity composed of 'wetware' contained within artificially manufactured bodies. Along the way we may stumble across whatever it is that makes us self-cognizant. This would fundamentally alter our concepts of what constitutes a living being. And the place of a deity in our lives.

Yes. Quotes to that effect are everywhere if you know where to look for them.

It was a very typical mindset of the times.

We have a lot of that technology now; the problem is more finding the will to do it in the general population.

Take a ride with William Shatner!

Only $210,000 for about three hours. You can spring for that, right?

Yep,ive caught that on the sci-fi channel at three in the morning...

We are far to too short sighted to care about anything but 'the now'.Actually a couple more world wars just might be the answer...technology advances much faster it seems during global war...peace time research and application(besides the 'cooling' period after a war) is slow and budget limited.War is popular and is givin a massive budget.

umm... we probably aren't putting a bunch of money into devoloping technology for this war because we already have enough firepower to wipe the whole country off the face of the map and leave just a big crater where the country was if we really wanted to...
