who are your top 5 favorite bands...

who are your top 5 favorite guitarist...

who do you think is better, such and such or so and so and why...

who is the best band of all time...

who is the best guitarist of all time...

what is your favorite style of music and why...

I'm really not trying to be a smart a$$ or make fun of these type threads, I just figured that since alot of you get a kick out of these type threads, why not start one that covers all the basics....if I left anything off feel free to add to it.

guess i'll go first

Bands:
Guns 'N' Roses
Van Halen (Roth & Haggar)
Alice in Chains
AC/DC
Lynyrd Skynyrd

Guitarist:
SRV
EVH
Slash
Clapton
Zakk Wylde

Favorite style of music:
eventhough I can't play it very good or much at all,
I love the Blues. I alway's seem to get lost in the
music when I listen to the Blues. Like I don't have
another care in the world.

as for best band, best guitarist, and who is better than who....well, I'll
leave that up to ya'll, cuz I'm not that biased.

Bands (in no order) -

Queen
The Beatles
Ozzy's group with Randy Rhoads
Charlie Parker with Dizzy Gillespie (they were in a ton of groups...)
The Jimi Hendrix Experience

Guitarists (in no order) -

Barney Kessel
Steve Vai
Eric Clapton
Jeff Beck
Randy Rhoads

I think that Clapton has to be one of the best singer/guitarist combos... he's just so into it. The beatles are in top 5 bands just because of there awe inspring song writing capability (I'm not just talking about those pop songs). Parker and Diz were just brilliant with Bebop, I couldn't leave them out. Randy Rhoads is my favorite guitarist, even though I don't really like the genre... Steve Vai and Jeff Beck are plain ol' crazy... Barney Kessel did sooo much with his instrument, at a time when jazz lead guitarists were unheard of (other than Django and Charlie Christian)

I can't say who the best band is... 'cuz there's so much good stuff out there... Queen was totally brilliant.

Favorite style of music: Jazz and Blues, I like shred and all that... but I can only take so much of it... I could listen to one jazz or blues song over and over... and never get tired. Just the feel is great. Blues may not be very technical, but it has tons of soul. Jazz also has soul and is friggin hard to play well.

Best guitarist I can't say... Maybe Al Di Meola... or John Mclaughlin... I don't really know there are sooo many.

Now I can honestly say that I don't like some music... But I can't say that one is bad, 'cuz that's naive (even though it has no relevance watsoever... i thot i'd say it)
There are only two important things in life - There's music and theres girls, not necessarily in that order....

Bands:

Jane's Addiction
Incubus
Faith No More
Massive Attack
Tool
Primus
(sorry, thats 6, but I could not give up any of these)

Guitar Players:

Dave Navarro
Mike Einziger
Jerry Cantrel
Tom Morello
John Frusciante

And some snapshots of my views about music
Generally, I find extremely technical guitar heroes quite boring and sterile
For me it matters more when the band as a whole has something to say, ie a political statement, a challenge to our perceptions.
Also, I am getting more and more interested in new forms of expression, which synthesise music with drama, choreography, visual arts and so on. I am looking forward in making joint projects with artists from these fields.
So, music as a sole aesthetical aim is not enough for me
Also, I am totaly open for all kinds of musical influences, and I believe that the broader spectrum of music one can absorb, the better music one can make. I relly dont understand the type of people who get stuck during their whole life in GN'R, Aerosmith, and so on.
Still I find that the style of music I feel most close to is late 80's and 90's Alternative/Post Alternative/Indie/etc.
Also, I appreciate classical music and jazz, but I can never listen to more than 15min, despite the fact that I consider myself influenced by jazz.
I see I have gone too far away from the topic, but I think it was necessary for me to explain my values, so that people get a better understanding
The world is loaded, it's lit to pop, nobody is gonna stop!

Bands:
Led Zeppelin
System of a Down
Queen
Metallica
Red Hot Chili Peppers

I have bso many favorite badns, those are just the first 5 good ones that came to mind

Jimmy Page is amazing, and same with the guitarist of metallica (i'm not great with names). Also, Daron Malakian (System of a Down) is considered a legendary guitarist, he's got alot of tricks up his sleeve.

I like rock and metal the most. Honestly, i like much more types of music than i dont like.

A lot of hairmetal guys ODed on that stuff too, you know.

And AiC wasn't Grunge. I don't care what those assholes at MTV and VH1 say, they (as an example) wouldn't know "Punk" if GG Allin rolled naked through his own feces and then punched them in the face.

Yea, technically speaking I guess they weren't grunge. They just happened to blow up during that whole era, and were definately alternative. The genres got blended together.

Good thread
BANDS (no order)

Pantera
NOFX
Metallica
Stevie Ray Vaughan/Govt Mule
and most recent favorite... Rise Against

Guitarists (no order)

Dimebag Darrell/Zakk Wylde (such similar SCREAMING styles)
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Kirk Hammett (1st main influence for me, although Ive lost interest in his distorted wah pedal solos)
John Petrucci (almost TOO technical!!! :)
Oh, and Leo Cockie (sp?)

And, just out of left field here, Marty Friedman is better then Dave Mustaine because he has more style. Dave can wail all he wants, dont get me wrong.
And as far as that goes, it is in my opinion that Dave Mustaine is better then Kirk Hammett, but Kirk's band comes equipt with the riff master himself (james hetfield) Im glad they threw Dave out or there would have been no Megadeth. Oh, and D. Darrell reigns over kerry king. Okay, Im done now.
Any wayz...

Best band of all time just about has to be Led Zepplin (in my opinion) not much I can say that hasnt been said about em. Its strange of me to say that though because I dont actually own any zepplin cds, but Ive heard em all like most people here.

Fav. style of music, mine is always morphing. I guess its been old school punk for a few years consistently, but then blues just grabs your soul. Metal pumps me up to lift weights and stuff....
Music rules, beer rules. Music about beer cannot be topped.

AIC was great, and they were a split between Metal and Grunge, but what do you guys consider grunge in the first place???? Alot of people think soundgarden was grunge....... But listen to their earlioer albums, they are more along the punk lines.

I guess alot of those bands who got popular in that time were kind of put into the grunge group...

If you want to talk authentic "Grunge," then Mudhoney, Nirvana and their ilk are what you're looking for.

While lyrically more "honest" and "darker," AiC came out of the hair metal scene (musically) and never really totally left it behind. And forget about finding a Grunge band with harmonies like that.

But, as has been said; pretty much everybody who came out of Seattle at that time got slapped with the Grunge label, accurate or not.
