Description

First let me show you the basic technique that we'll be using, which really isn't all that different from what we've explored earlier in the course. But once we start building on it, you'll see a world of possibilities open up.

Banjo players learn that they need to hold their hand like their holding a credit card, but I wouldn't worry too much about that on acoustic guitar. It's better to be relaxed.

The important thing is that you're able to alternate between bass notes, picked by your thumb and then a quick up and down stroke with your 1st, 2nd and 3rd finger. The nails hit the strings on the way down, and then the skin hits them on the way up.

Let's try it in an example: First let's do one full bar on G. Then one full bar on C. Notice that your thumb now has to move to the A string. One full bar on D7 thumb on D string now.

Now we're back to G, and we'll do the pattern for 2 beats, and then on beat 3 we'll end on a full strum of the G chord that we let ring.

Now let's practice this example, extra slowly with the metronome. Remember that the tempo I've picked may be too fast or to slow for you, so in that case you can just do the exercise on your own.
