This second lesson is the most crucial step in developing speed. Over the years in teaching people how to play guitar, and specifically to build super fast speed, this technique exercise has been the most useful.

The very simple, but highly effective, idea is to play each note more than once, then gradually lower the amount. This accomplishes a few things at once. After all the key to training your mind and body to do some specific physical technique is repetition.

  • It helps in getting a lot of practice at alternate picking.
  • It helps in memorizing the scale pattern & hand positions.
  • It helps in co-ordination of your hands - both picking and fretting hand

By dwelling on each note more than once, also, you are not required to move your fretting hand fingers so often. You are in effect "slowing down" a fast lick, but still playing fast. And this also give you a lot of work on your alternate picking technique, which is an essential part of this whole process of building speed.
