Best Decade or Era in Rock

This is something that I wanted to ask for awhile. Personally, I like the late 60's early 70's and the early 90's. But I would like to know what you guys think and your favourite era or decade.

Definitely the mid to late 80's and early 90's just before the Grunge era took over and killed it all.

90's.

I would say 70's....there was a lot of bad sh@$%, but some great creative bands and albums were done then.

I can barely answer this question. I like to listen to the progressions of music from one era to another because there's always something that makes the little light bulb in my head flinch. Not one too much more than any other, except a few. I think the early 20th century is the most fascinating because so much changed during that period. My favorite is probably the late 60's and 70's though, because that's when hard rock music flourished. I'm one of those guys who picks out the best music (in my opinion) from each era. Listen to alittle hard rock, then some metal, maybe alittle later some jazz or blues. Sure everyone does this, but it kinda makes a favorite hard to pinpoint.

Cant answer this as my favourite players cant be tied down to any decade as the music they play is timeless and has never been part of any trend or fashion. Of course the best music tends to be that which cant be pigeonholed in any way. Im talking about players like Leo Kottke, Ry Cooder, Chet Atkins, Albert Lee and many others not so well known.

Definitely the 80s!!!

One of the main reasons is that most of the bands that are now either disbanded or are making CDs now that aren't as good as their first ones were formed in the 80s. Metallica was created and definitely got their "Metal gods" status during that time. Megadeth, for the "disbanded" part... And a lot of other bands that broke grounds with their first or second album but are now just recycling their same **** over and over.

I would say the 60s and 70s, then the 90s. The 80s pretty much sucked.

I liked the 80's man. Bands like Van Halen, Motley Crue, Metallica, and Guns -n- Roses were all good bands. I also liked the Cure. The worst thing about the 80's was the lousy attempt at techno pop (yeah i did meantion the cure but they were cool and still are), and other whiny pop acts. Glam rock was ok until the later 80's when it just became too much. I was glad when Nirvana hit the scene because they made music raw again. Not the greatest musicians but very good artists. I'd say the worst years in music where the late 90's, when wu-tang, biggy, and tupac rapped about killing each other. Screw that man, I remember finishing up my last years of H.S. when that crap was big and I saw all my old friends turn into gangstas.

I'm with most of you here: 90s then 60 and 70s. This is my countdown. And I also think that the 80s suck, they were pretty much guilty for the poor state of the ozone layer with all those hairstyles crap. There are still some good thing abouth the 80s though, I like the Cure and similar bands. Also Jane's Addiction emerged in the late 80s and influenced most of the cool stuff from the 90s

It also depends on what you like. That would determine the better decade of music for you but not everyone. For instance, I love the thrash, speed, ****in fast as hell metal and the 80s was when the first ones that kept re-defining the line at which how fast metal could get started.

Hair bands hurt how good the 80s were because the 80s were good... not the hairband ****. If you're a fan of heavy metal, I HIGHLY recommend getting this book "Sound of the Beast: The Complete Headbanging History of Heavy Metal". It's a real great book but most importantly, they have a "Top 10" list of diff. types of metal.. speed, thrash, power, death, black, prog. It starts with Black Sabbath (Naturally!! :cool: ) and goes till mid 90s or so. But if you don't buy it, at least check out the top 10 lists because they list the best CDs to get and 99% of them are not "hair bands" so don't lump them into the 80s to make the 80s suck because they didn't. At least that's my opinion. :p

ok, Best kind of rock, Hard rock, followed by metal, followed closely by blues rock, then southern rock, then prog rock. Punk rock pretty much sucks, as does grunge.

I think Punk gets a bad rap because people don't actually listen to it enough to actually get it. Or they listen to only the ****ty bands like Blink or something. Yeah, they're not the most technical songs and there opening act isn't a guy coming out and shredding non-sense through random scales. But there are some really good punks bands, The Clash which everyone knows and also a band I've been listening to alot is The Toy Dolls. A great band and good musicians. I saw a video of them, and the guitarist/singer plays this kick ass solo blind-folded, and on a dewds shoulders. If you actually get a chance to hear one of there Cd's, they're really tight plus they'll make you laugh. For all things that make a good song, they're are many punk bands that did them well. Saying Punk sucks is like saying folk music sucks, which is what punk basically is just with alot of energy.

Old school punk is great. (Ramones,Clash,Pistols)

ok, old school punk is ok, but Flogging molly is the only punk band I like today.

I love The Clash. They are my favorites among the punkers because they had the true punk attitude. I mean in the beggining their first album was pure punk -- lots of distortion, powerchords and etc. When they saw that this is getting commercial and stuff they shifted their direction to more experimental music, they combined varios influences(such as jazz, funk, even hip hop ) with their punk roots in their later albums.
SO in this respect todays punkers are not punkers at all. Because the original idea of punk was to go against the big stars who considered themselves something more than human beings. It was kind of a anti-movement. ANd what today's punkers are doing is going over the same powerchord progressions and not doing anything provocative at all. Here I don't mean that you should act like an ass and get drunk and stoned all the time -- this is also a cliche and by doing this you prove that you don't get anything.
I don't know why I am going into this. I just basically kind of get angry when somebody says that the whole punk is crap and there is no idea behind it which is bassicaly not true. What we see today is not what punk was about rather it is what it fought against.

What we see today is popstars dissgracing the guitar.
