Hello,

I am considering purchasing the 1year subscription for 99 usd. Is it worth it only for the song library? It seems to me it is not up-to-date and on top of that they erased a lot of songs.  What do you think?  Thx!

I am still here after the purge and use the site as a simple go to reference. I haven't found a subject yet they don't have a lesson on.  Not to mention you can ask questions using the forum and someone, usually Christopher (instructor) will get back to you. That in itself would be worth $8.25/month to me.

So I guess it depends on what you are looking for, if it's songs, you can get most of what you want from YouTube, maybe not as clear but you can learn anything from YouTube.

For $99USD, (that's $140 for me up here in the 51st but that will soon change once we join the great union and then I'll being paying $99!)  this is the best single point for reference material that I have found since I started learning guitar in 2019.

Good luck

Is it worth the $99?  It depends on how many of the songs you like and want to learn.  You're correct in saying that the song library isn't up to date, and it probably never will be.  If you search through these posts for the last couple of years, you'll find GT was deceptive in their posting of new songs.  They finally, grudgingly, admitted they wouldn't be adding new songs.  For me the answer is NO it's no longer worth being a member because from the time I joined back in 2008 they've deleted about 500 songs.  It could be worth it for YOU to join for a year if you like the songs they currently have but don't expect to see any new ones and there's always the possibility you could still lose some more once you've joined.

I would say it’s not worth it just for the song library. I come here for structured lessons and to keep me moving forward with practice rather than noodling around. If I want to learn a song, I go to Carl Brown on YouTube. He is great and has almost every song that you can think of if you are a rock player. The song lessons that are here are very good but it’s just a limited selection.

William, can’t wait to have you as 51. I wonder where the star will go on the flag.

One really great thing about this site is that you can ask questions in the forum about anything on or related to teaching material contained herein (including songs lessons) , and you'll get a timely direct answer from a bona fide professional musician. That alone is worth $99 USD** per year (30 cents/day). And even after the purge, there's still way more than a lifetime worth of songs to learn. And let's not forget Anders' Guitar Insider. Some of those tips and tricks are truly priceless.

** I'm not sure what that amounts to in Canadian currency - something like 4 beaver pelts and a fistful of moose teeth 😄

Of course it's worth it. You'll learn more guitar in a month with Guitar Tricks than you would playing by yourself in a year. GT has everything you need to be a complete musician from learning music theory to triads to their great core lesson courses (Blues, Country, Acoustic, Rock). In addition, you can learn how to use a whammy bar, bending techniques as well as other techniques that the pro's use, etc. The Artist Studies (AC/DC, the Kings, Billy Gibbons, etc) are also awesome. When you get to the songs, you learn the song accurately and complete and in the correct keys. So, in my humble opinion, cough up the 100 bucks and start learning but remember, you get back what you put in. It's hard work to be consistent.

To pick up where Tommy B's excellent points left off, what alternative does someone have if they're truly interested in learning to play and understand music? Individual lessons with a qualified competent instructor cost at least $100/hr. I don't get it - people will pay $6 daily for a cup of coffee, but balk at shelling out 30 cents per day for essentially unlimited guitar instruction from professional musicians, not to mention a mountain of music related reference material. I suppose one could go to YouTube and haphazardly learn music theory from an armadillo banging on a ukulele 🤪
