In this forum there's a bit too much preoccupation with shredding. For me , some of the best solos are not necessarily fast but perhaps feature a lot of string bending and sustain and just simply get you in the gut. You know the feeling I mean? Examples

Baker Street by Jerry Rafferty - brilliant use of sustain and whammy bar.
All right now - ultimate for air guitar tortured look
Another brick in the wall and Shine on you crazy diamond - for me there's more feeling i each of the solos on these 2 tracks than in a thousand CDs worth of shredding.

Othe examples?

Anything by Dave Gilmour, the master of the skow solo
To improve technique and of course trying to keep all as clean as possible. I know my own limits and speed limits and so on I never play anything I'm not capable of. That wouldn't make any sense. After three years of playing I tried to play everything as fast as possible and that sounded, I would say, like shit, and I didn't realize that if I'd play bit slower things than I was capable of playing then everything would sound much better.

I too love slow solos, in fact most of my solos are slow but use alot of "on-guitar-effects". Bending,hammer,pull-off,vibrato and sometimes the occasional wah. I am always searching for some good sounding "feeling" solos as opposed to "speed" solos.

slash is an example of why slow solo's are better than fast solo's, for example can anyone except for slash get those solo's in november rain perfect?? even though i do idolize randy rhoades and zack wyld as they play both slow and fast one solo medium speed solo i do think you should check out is "road to nowhere" from ozzy osbourne

Yeah I still to this day cant fathom just how its possible to come up with solos that good!! I mean the bed of the solo in November Rain is a simple three chord repeat but from that slash comes up with thee most beautiful piece!! Its mind blowing!! And some of you guys prefer Buckethead hhu!!

I don't think the thread was meant to hail slow solos over shredding , it was just to mention the best of the slow solos ... And just as some shredding , some slow solos su*k donkeys' balls.

I agree with your point aiwass, fast and slow thingi doesn't make a cool solo or a bad solo , a good solo is a good solo & a bad one is a bad one , no matter what was the bpm.

As soon as someone mentioned Slash being awesome at slow solos, I immediately thought of November Rain also.

aiwass has clearly missed the point. I started this thread to draw attention to the fact that some of the greatest solos arent just limited to high speed legatos. I'm as big a fan of Satch and Steve V's fretburning as any. What separates these 2 from most of the rest is that they play with taste and know when to let rip at the right time. too many other 'rated' players dont have these qualities and shred for its own sake when it clearly doesnt suit the song.

aiwass - your taste is perfect!

Interview from tcguitar with Jennifer batten:

TCG: What's it like playing (musically and technically) with Jeff, Randy and Steve?
JB: Bliss. It's challenging and inventive every nigh, because Jeff will never play the same from night to night. He's the most inventive, evolving guitarist there is. That really fuels all of us [...] He's an endless source of ideas and interpretations. Sometimes it's just a simple bend that will floor me. It's the nuance that makes him stand above all other players. It's been a real eye opener to see how he learns things too. He'll play a new part a million different ways and usually end up with real inconvenient fingering that most players wouldn't consider, but it sounds different and better than the norm.

first and foremost, the appealing nature of music esp. slash doesnt lie in the fact of "who can shreed faster". There is something to be said for creativity...something that music was generally about. Basically what they lack today. If racing cars were about speed then there would only be drag races and no indy's or nascar...get the point.

Good point Polera ... And that's why people who are concentrating 100% to be able to do 16th notes @ 400 bpm will never make it to anywhere , cuz there's a point of speed when it becomes unpleasant & non-musical .

A better guitarist is that one who knows when to slow down & when to speed up , and makes it sounds cool.

Andre Olbrich of Blind Guardian isn't bad. he uses a lot of effects but overall, his stuff is really good.
To improve technique and of course trying to keep all as clean as possible. I know my own limits and speed limits and so on I never play anything I'm not capable of. That wouldn't make any sense.
