Now that I've moved onto difficult taping stuff I'm finding it hard to silence strings. Yeah, tying a sock around your fretboard is ok but I'd like a proper piece of kit for it. Do you guys know where I can get one from? I've seen that MACE music (Micheal angelo connection)sell them at the preposterous sum of $89 but that's crazy for something that's practically just a capo that doesn't work!

Get a chick's hair thing (a scrunchie?) that matches the color of your guitar. Stretch it over your guitar's headstock and leave it right above the nut. Whenever you want to go into tapping, just slide it past the nut over the first fret. When you're done, put it back behind the nut and resume playing as normal. MAKE SURE THAT IT MATCHES YOUR GUITAR (i.e. - don't get pink unless you're secure)
"You must stab him in the heart with the Bone Saber of Zumacalis... well, you could stab him in the head or the lungs, too... and the saber, it probably doesn't have to be bone, just anything sharp lying around the house... you could poke him with a pillow and kill him."

why is it cheating to use a string damper?? its damn difficilt to slightly impossible to damp all the trings when you do 8 or 10 fingertapping - how would you damp the other strings that start to ring just from the vibration energy that is put onto the fretboard by tapping against it with the fingers? I mean.. just look at the chapmanstick - that instrument would be impossible to play without the attached string damper (there is some sort of fur glued to the fretboard between the nut and the first fret). Cheating.. schmeating

Yip, agreed, it'd be nice not to have to use dampners but sometimes you've got to cheat. I don't need one for "midnight".

ya can pick up a pack of em for just a few bucks and they last years.
The ones from the toy store are best ...they have nifty kitty cats on em.

So. If you throw a cat out of a car window, is it considered "kitty litter"?

A poor mans string dampener can be one of those thick asses pony tail holders.

Or better yet...Michael Angelo sells one on his site although a bit pricey:

pics of it in use:

When I attended G.I.T. from 94 to 95..Roy Ashen one of my teachers there who tought the 8 finger tapping technique used a ponytail holder (The girly looking thick kind). He's even used a sock tied lightly around the first fret area.
I started learning guitar because of Randy Rhoads..but Yngwie J. Malmsteen is my biggest influence.

I've used scrunchies before but the ones I use dont' hold tight enough unless you wrap them round twice, when you do you have a problem loosening them so you can play normally. I was after a way to waste money on technology that would only make my life slightly easier.

Look around some more & experiment with several different styles till you find one that works, then just buy a carton of em. The new ones I got are from a clothing store & they're like $10 for just a few of em. They're really thin & you have to struggle like hell to get it onto the neck but once there, it fits perfect. It's dark brown so it blends in with the wood color of the neck. It also dampens the strings just enough so that if you accidentally forget it's there and go to play an open chord you don't just get a dead chunk.
You just gotta keep practicing with it like any other guitar technique until it works.

Dampeners are also used behind the nut, placed across the strings between there and the tuners. it stops the strings that arent played from vibrating. when they do it sonicly travels through the guitar and the pickups send it out to your amp. the result is a after ring almost re-verb like sound. 7/8 strings and guitars with longer distances between the nut and the tuners have more to gain from dampeners. www.guitarstringdampeners.com
