Ok Gang, I have been saving my pennies and it is time to get a Les Paul, but hold on a mo…. which one ? There are like a billion different models !

Im thinking of a either a classic or a studio, any one out their in Guitar tricks land have vast amounts of les Paul experience? I have trawled through Gibson’s Web site as well as Harmony Central and have started to form an impression however.....

In terms of quality vs price is a custom LP worth nearly 2k more than a studio LP ?

I will sit down with a bunch of axes before I decide to buy anything however any input / experience would be good to know, forewarned is forearmed etc !

Cheers

The studio is cheaper because it use less quality wood than the standard and because it has less frills like dot inlays in stead of the original pearl square peices and the turning keys are of lesser qaulity etc. So that they can reach to a lower market and still have the true gibson name.
WWSD? What would stevie do?

Hell if you're gonna go...GO BIG!!

Get the Les Paul Supreme!!! Limited Edition....AAAA Flamed Top...Gorgeous inlay work....If I ever brought myself to buy a LP it would be the one I would buy, basically because I think the LP pickguards are tacky...
So. If you throw a cat out of a car window, is it considered "kitty litter"?

I'm a Classic man all the way. I don't have any Gibson Classics but 2 Epiphones. I do believe the Classics weigh a little more hence there a bit tougher on wear. I love em.

Doc, you're probably going to be satisfied with any LP you get, but if i were you i would go to the music store and play around and see which one sounds and feels the best.

Lucky bas**** :)
To improve technique and of course trying to keep all as clean as possible. I know my own limits and speed limits and so on I never play anything I'm not capable of. That wouldn't make any sense. After three years of playing I tried to play everything as fast as possible and that sounded, I would say, like shit, and I didn't realize that if I'd play bit slower things than I was capable of playing then everything would sound much better.

I always preferred the Les Paul standards. The studios play and sound nice but they probably don't hold their value like the other models, so if your gonna spend that type of cash you might as well get something you can turnaround and sell or trade in in a couple of yrs for the smae amount you paid for it or even more.
I never liked the customs. Their the only 3 models I ever played; standard, studio, & custom. My vote: Standard

If your from the UK then buy off the internet. I got a Gibson Les Paul Classic 96' for 800 pounds from a USA dealer. That would be £1500 in the UK!!

I haven't shopped for a guitar in a long time but I remember every time I tried Les Pauls, it was like putting a 10 ton rock around my neck...
Man, those things are heavy...I don't know how anybody could use one in a live situation every night.
Hey you kids! Get outta that Jello tree!!

The only problem I have with them is that everyone uses them. I mean there have been a few that have "earned" the right to use it, like Slash. I mean nowadays there are all kinds of punk bands using the Les Paul. I am not a big fan of their sound, and I am not one to "follow the crowd". Ya their heavy too, I thought carrying around my Tele was bad for a few hours, I couldn't imagine a Les Paul for that long!

For me it´s impossible to play fast on Fender guitars. Dunno why. And it´s sad that all these punk bands have Les Paul guitar just because it´s cool to have a Les Paul all way down to the knees. I´ll bet that they would play eaqully bad!!! and wouldn´t realize the difference between a Les Paul and a Morgan.

I apologize in advance to all of you Les Paul lovers but
when considering the recent quality of Gibson I would recommend you to check out the USA Hamer "The Les Paul Killer" Studio or Sunburst (same guitar). A member from Hamer Fan Club and G&L forum organized a blind test in G&L forum with four different guitars all with the same kind of pickup configurement and neck joints and bridges. There were a historic Les Paul, a Hamer Studio or Sunburst, one G&L and one Carvin. The Hamer beat them all hands down. Les Paul became last. They were all tested with same amps with same settings with both clean and dirty channels. My intention is not to criticize anything 'cause after all it's a matter of personal tastes
but check out the Hamers, you can't lose anything if you try one but you might be positively surprised by their quality and bang for the buck.
Thanks

Jani

'still there, Doc?

When you're ready to come up for air, take a mo to tell us about it! I'm curious to find out how much guitar you got for the price of a Yamaha SBG1000. You may recall that I bought my 'Brand X' back in '84 instead of an LP Custom.

Sure thing, I have just got a second hand D1200 to use as a front end for all my computer recording stuff. I know the D1600 very well so there aint much in the way of a learning curve ! So, Ill not only be talking about it ad nausium but also recording it and boring every one ridged with my pitiful ratings.

Catherine is out of town this weekend so Im fixing to drink some beer, make some noise and play some geeeeeeetaaawwww !
