Some types of paints will need you to re-paint the whole guitar body , other types of paint (like most gibsons) can be easily repaired.
I'm not sure of the paint types anyway , go to the tech talk section and ask "pstring" , he knows better than I do.

Anyway , some people like to keep those scratches , it gives a vintage look to the guitar.

I'm sorry to hear that your guitar has been damaged. That can feel like seeing a good friend get hurt.

As SLY has pointed out, it depends on what kind of finish your guitar has. Take it to a guitar tech and hear what they say about it. It may be that you will need the services of a luthier (someone who makes guitars). Applying the finish to a guitar is one of the trickiest parts of the whole manufacturing process.

It also depends on whether or not you even care. Look at some of the fenders that Stevie Ray Vaughn or Jimi Hendrix played. By the time they were done using it (or died), there were so many nicks and scratches . . . you almost couldn't see what color the original guitar was!

Face it, after awhile, your guitar (unless you keep it in an airlocked cryogenic freezer) is gonna get a little beat up.

My guitar has (literally) chunks missing out of it. But it's built good and is a wonderful peice of equipment.
