What do you guys think the most overrated guitar is? Acoustic and/or electric.
Personally I think the Gibson Les Paul is overrated. I mean ya they are nice,well built, and feel good, but everyone uses them! Does nobody want their own sound anymore?

i'm sick of seeing everyone in GuitarWorld with a goddamn Les Paul! thanks for mentioning it.
i see all these punk bands that are probably good and stuff but they are using "all they have". Gibson Les Pauls. and not cheap second-handers, reissues and deluxe and plus and names like that.
i like seeing a billion different guitars for all sorts of people. i mean, i see punkers and metalheads and then classic rockers and hard rockers using them. i like seeing lots of different using a lot of different guitars.
but that's just me.

I dunno, there are alot of great guitars out there that cost more than $1000. My personal favorite: '72 Telecaster Custom. But thats just me.


P.S:I took a vow to never own a Les Paul or Les Paul look alike. I have played one, loved the feel of the neck, but hated how the body is not even. When I had it on my knee it kept tilting backwards.

Gibson guitars rulez but the idiots who set the prices are way out of the line. I would really like to get one (the white one that Randy Rhoads had kills me evrytime I see it. What a babe) but no way I can aford ´em yet. Hm, I wonder if I can get those beauties at black market if there´s such for guitars.

i think that a Gibson Les Paul IS a great guitar. i might even end up getting one when i'm way older if i have the spare change. but i probably won't make it my main guitar. it's cool and all and you can go "i own a Les Paul" and play something on it. but EVERYONE has one and it's just really annoying to see EVERY goddamn guitarist holding a Les Paul. what happened? did i miss something?
also, the prices match the production year.

I think just about any guitar that has been around for fifty years or more and has been copied innumerable times probably has a few things going for it.

My nomination for the Most Overrated Guitar Award would have to go to almost anything made by Ibanez.

I gotta go with Gibson Les Paul as being overated. $3500 canadian dollers! Sure it looks great, feels good, and is quality but to see it everywhere is a bit of a downer. Remember who it was that brought it back in to the mainstreem from the eighties strats, it was SLASH!

Ibanez guitar are still at acceptable prices and definitly worth money. At least in Sweden but I don´t like ´em ´cause I can´t mute on anything else than Les Paul guitars.

I dislike Ibanez' stuff because their guitars rarely have the mass to produce the kind of tone I want. I mean, my Telecaster is like nine pounds; if you were to shut your eyes and heft it, you'd think it's a Les Paul.

i agree, ibanz are danty. Especially the neck are so skinny, but that could be a good thing. Most entry level ibanez really suck as well, quality wise. I m not however speaking about their expensive ends guitars, cause i wouldnt know.

HOw can you guys say a Gibson les Paul is overrated, its one, if not theee greatest guitar of all time. You cant not like it just because its become iconic amounst some pop bands and the likes. You can pick them up for around $1000 - $1300 2nd hand, and for that you have the pinical of guitaring!!!

Jeez, Brian mays guitar is overrated, sounds like a feckin Kazoo.

I think the only reason its "theee" guitar is because it was the first "electric guitar". SO it paved the way for other electric guitars. But just because it was the first doesn't mean its the best.

yeah, the les paul is a good guitar. but why does EVERYONE have one? it's damn expensive and doesn't really cover every genre it's used for. i just don't get it. i would get one if i had the chance, but it's definitely not my dream guitar or anything.

Musicians are usually artistic in their personality, which often means we rely heavily on emotions for decision-making, and haven't got a clue about technical stuff. People tend to ignore inconvenient facts (like 'tone' comes from your [u]hands[/u]), and chase the easy stuff instead (like buying the same gear as your favourite guitar hero).

Well thats like saying "everyone has a fender!" cos most rythmn guitarists have them! Yeah true- les pauls are extremely popular and used is an icon in many cases, but you can tell the difference between the brand new shiny models and the 80's classy ones, reissues, rare models, with new pickups, the ones with more character! The Goldtop was really common a while back, I remember on a Pop music show in the UK there was 3 outa the five performances, and these were with non-guitar orientated music.

The Tele has it beat by a year or two in that department.
And actually, Bigsby made a few solidbody electrics a few years earlier than the Broadcaster (Telecaster) first came out - they were just very limited in quantity.

I was at a show once, with teenage bands, and all the groups (20-25) had a Gibson Les Paul, except for one band. The guy had the Gibson double neck. But what does that tell you about people writing their "own" music. They all use the same guitar, and quite honestly I couldn't tell much difference between each band, everything sounded the same. I think the reason they all have the Les Paul is because they think its "thee" guitar to have and to be successful you "neeeed" it. Definetly not true.
