This chord gave me a lot of problems. Occasionally I still mute the A string.
I use the Folk G major version which just involves three fingers

What is the Folk G major version? Are you referring to this? This the G major I normally play.
Doesn't appear my image was uploaded.
Here's the link.

A few variations would be any of these:
3 2 0 0 0 3
3 2 0 0 3 3
Or even
3 X 0 0 0 3
3 X 0 0 3 3 doesn't sound very good in my opinion
Numbers represent fret number, starting on 6th string ( a zero = open string; an X = muted or not played ).
I wish this forum had a "block user" feature. Possibly I'm not the only one......

I've played since 81ish and the 'muted A' version was the only way I played the chord. Was just the way I learned. I depends on the style though. The classic cowboy chord version of an open G is the preferred version to my ears. Playing woth overdrive? I think any version works. But that's me.

That was the only way I played an open G for decades. Granted with a good chunk of overdrive but also, the trick is to be sure the A is, in fact, muted.

If it wasn't muted, then it wouldn't be the 3X0033 chord..... it would be something else. I just don't particularly like this voicing ... 3 X 5 4 3 X sounds far more interesting, in my opinion :)

3 X 0 0 3 3 is not G major, it is a G5 power chord. There's no 3rd interval.
G X D G D G

Well spotted. I just stick that voicing in whenever I think it "sounds" right, but hadn't really given any thought to what note I was actually dropping.
I blame an old friend who was into Jazz. He taught me about broken/partial chords (mainly because there aren't enough fingers or strings to play every note for some chords, so something has to go). I sometimes play a chord that is given a particular name but doesn't contain the root or 3rd, so could arguably be called something that doesn't even fit in that specific key.....
I love music theory........
One main point for beginners, though: learning theory is really useful, but don't let it bog you down to the point where you stop enjoying playing. The theory stuff makes sense but it does take a while, and there are some excellent lessons on here coving scales, how chords are structured from them, and so on.

if you were to listen to a song in major, it would always sound uplifting, right? like, c major. SO WHY THE HELL DOES G MAJOR SOUND LIKE FUCKIN SATANWAVE?
edit: i am very sorry that i seemed to offend you with this, and i am sorry that i asked a question about something i did not know much about. however, have half of you read the first rule of the subreddit?
