I've played since 81ish and the 'muted A' version was the only way I played the chord. Was just the way I learned. I depends on the style though. The classic cowboy chord version of an open G is the preferred version to my ears. Playing woth overdrive? I think any version works. But that's me.

That was the only way I played an open G for decades. Granted with a good chunk of overdrive but also, the trick is to be sure the A is, in fact, muted.
