Hmm, that's a tough one for me. At one point I had nothing for influences beyond radio friendly, monotonous power chord sporting pieces of crap. Over the years my observations have yielded many truly talented/creative influences (all of which I can't begin to name). I'm not going to begin to state that my "current" favorites are the best, just that I find them to be really really good. I'd have to say Opeth's Mikael Akerfeldt for his creative complexity and Cryptopsy's John Levaussuer for his speed and brutality. Of course I'm very much influenced by Joe Satriani, Michael Angelo Batio and Jimmy Page for pretty much obvious reasons. But my favorite guitarist is always changing, just depends on what I"m in the mood for.

Satch and Vai do it for me.
Blues is easy to play, but hard to feel.

I am new to this site but i have been playin for awhile... my original desire to play guitar was after i heard the begining of back in black. After that i got into Eddie Van Halen. My top 5 guitarists are probably...... 1. Eddie Van Halen, 2. SRV, 3. Steve Vai, 4. Duane Allman, 5. Randy Rhoads

I think eric clapton, kurt cobain, and tom morello are the most over rated guitarists ever.

When I listended to Voodoo Chile by Hendrix I knew I wanted to play guitar... that song and other songs by Hendrix have had the same effect on countless people including Joe Satriani and Kirk Hammet.

Favorite All Around: Hendrix
Favorite Blues: Hendrix/SRV
Best Tone: Eric Johnson
Fastest: Jason Becker/Yngwie Malmsteen
Weirdest Stage Antics: MIcheal Angelo Batio

I also like: Steve Vai, Angus and Malcom Young, Joe Satriani, Kirk Hammet, Joe Walsh, Don Felder, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Dimebag Darrel, David Gilmour, Rhandy Rhoads... and there are more but I am too lazy to list them.

Paul Gilbert can play flamenco, shred classical arpeggios, play awesome rhythm guitar WHILE he sings, play cool blues riffs, play straight ahead arena LICKS-He can do it ALL..

And did I mention he's one of the ,if not THE fastest player in the world?

All this adds up to Paul rules...

Oh and by the way ,thanks to tangento for having the GUTS to expose that greasy little twerp that claims he plays guitar by the name of Kirk Hammett-Kirk sucks-it's that simple-He is almost as overrated as Cobain-The only guy from popular music in the last few years that was worth a crap-is the guy from CREED-and thats only because he is old school..

And finally, for all you little "i'm weak" generation geeksters out there listening
to your whining grungers playing through a clean amp, grow up and listen to some Iron Maiden for christ sake and get a job you losers..

Wow, to rip on Kirk Hammet and then say that Mark Tremonti is worth a crap...now that's the last thing I'd expect to hear. And how can you call Kurt CObain an overrated player...who said in the first place that he's a great guitarist? I think most people would agree that kurt was no virtuoso or even close, but he affected a ton of people with his music, including myself. Kurt inspired me to play guitar when i was 12 years old. 8 years later, my apirations as a musician have changed and i can play better than Kurt ever could, but still, thats why i started playing...

And i dont think tom morello is overrated either, and i think he's one of the more underrated guitarists out there today. While I'm not a big fan of audioslave, RATM was the sh*t!! Aside from the fact that he's extremely technically sound, he approaches the guitar differently than your average player. Doesn't anyone else find that to be important and think that theres more to being a good guitarist than playing a zillion notes per second and non-stop sweep arpeggios (as cool at is it may sound)? And i'm not about to put them on the same level, but what if jimi hendrix just picked up the guitar and played it like it was "meant to be played"? He didnt. He explored the guitar and the different things you can do with it sonically (i.e. controlled feedback and such). In a time where so much music sounds alike and with bands whose sounds are basically interchangeable, it's great for some CREATIVE players to come around like Tom Morello.

Good point about Bettencourt-he used to be one of my favorites in the Pornograffiti days -excellent sense of rhythm and timing -not to mention monster chops..

Alas ,lately he seems to have sold out to the grunge scene
in order to "fit in"-complete with black fingernails and idiot guitars -just like the rest, playing through a clean amp, chords only-no "politically incorrect" solos for him anymore..

What a sellout and a waste of sheer talent..

As for Tremonti,I suppose that was my whole point-he's the best the newer generation offers -he at least has a good sense of melody and has the balls to play through a dirty amp-for this alone I respect him in contrast to his weakling peers.

And I'm sorry ,but he smokes Kirk Hammett-Hammett is a complete joke-how much talent does it take to run around
stage and play stale wah pedal licks -ad infinitum?-

Metallica needs to reunite with Mustaine-he could get the job done the way it needs to be done and take them back to their roots away from the commercial BS they are playing now..

These are the players who inspired me to pick up the guitar:

-Andres Segovia (the first time I ever felt the urge to play air guitar was when I heard his version of some Villalobos piece, the name of which I have forgotten :o )

-Darren Middleton and Ian Haug from Powderfinger ("Waiting for the Sun" was the song that started my consummate love affair with rock - so simple, yet so incredibly effective)

-Dave Murray from Iron Maiden (The first heavy metal solo I ever listened to was the one from "Brave New World". I've never been the same since :) )
"It's all folk music... I ain't never heard no horse sing!"
- Attributed variously to Leadbelly and Louis Armstrong

If at first you don't succeed, you are obviously not Chuck Norris.

Oh, I like Kirk Hammett! He's good fun; even if his solos aren't technically dazzling, they still make you want to play air guitar like a madman.

That said, I'm sorry, Kirk: in terms of technical articulacy, Akira owns your ass :D .
