So I've been making my way through Fundamentals 1 and hit a snag. I had to send my guitar in for a repair. I borrowed my friends electric (an SG) and now I'm thinking of buying an electric myself. I'm on a budget and thought a pack would be the way to go. I was thinking of the affinity telecaster. I like classic rock, country, and folk rock/folk and think it would be a good fit. Being a pack I'm concerned about quality, playability, etc. Anyone have any experience with these packs or similar? I included a link to the pack I'm interested in. Thanks.

Hi markpetten,

I actually started out on the same pack you linked to, but the Stratocaster version. I'll let others chime in here with their own experiences, but I thought for the money it was a great choice. The guitar played well right out of the box, and while the amp isn't spectacular, it works and is beginner friendly.

Thanks Ben. I'm looking for beginner friendly all around. Maybe later I'll upgrade, same as with my acoustic. I didn't want to go with the strat because I don't want to play with a tremolo just yet.

I currently own an Affinity Tele from the starter pack and it's a great guitar. The affinitys that come in the player packs are actually a bit better quality than the ones they sell on their own as the pack Teles are a string through design and Indonesian made vs Chinese. I've had a few Indo' built Squiers and all have been great guitars about on par with my Mexican built Fender Strat.

If I had one complaint about the Tele, it'd be that the neck pickup is a bit weak, but it's good enough for my current playing abilities and can be easily upgraded down the road for relatively cheap. The bridge pickup has the typical pleasant twang expected of a Tele

I agree with the post above! I started with an Affinity Squier and it still plays extremely well today. I got that guitar over a decade ago.

Squiers are pretty good bang for the buck.

I dont know if this helps but I must tell you that I bought the Keith Urban Night Star solid body electric and it came straight from the factory with a nice low action and its a great guitar. For 199 you can't go wrong. I also bought a Yamaha FGX 800 C for about 250 as an acoustic electric. That's actually all I need and when I finally get really good on both these guitars I will buy my dream Fender American Telecaster and a Gibson Hummingbird Acoustic as an upgrade!!

I had someone make fun of the amp that came with my Squier Strat until I pointed out a few things:

1. The guitar by itself costs 200$

2. The amp is probably worth about 50$

3. Cables would be about 6$

4. Gig bag: 15$

5. Total should be 260$ (not counting set up fee which was done for free).

6. I paid 225 for the set.

7. The biggie: I won't be ready to rock out a stadium or bar for a year or two so the amp does it's job perfectly.

Not to forget that the guitar itself isn't poorly constructed and the strings are okay for learning the basics/getting a feel for the guitar.

But that's my 2 cents.

What is this "strumming" of which you speak?

Have you looked on craigslist or facebook marketplace? You might find one that was a Xmas gift that the recipient hardly played and is willing to sell for 1/2 of new.

Another old post but hopefully will help

One word of caution. Gibson necks feel very different than Fender necks. You will probably favor one or the other. I have tried to like Gibson necks but my fingers like Fender.

If you like the SG (Gibson), I would look within the Gibson/Epiphone family or do a lot of trials with the Fender before buying it.
