Need help w/ Palm Muting....

For some reason, I can't figure out how to palm mute. I know that probably sounds lame, but whenever I do it, I get a very weird noise and it sounds nothing like what the actual song does. Is there some sort of trick to it? How much pressure should you have on your right hand holding the strings down?

Any advice would be very appreciated.

I palm mute with the fleshy edge of my hand near the pinky. I rest this part of my picking hand on the strings where they cross the bridge saddles. By rolling my hand, I can control the amount of muting I apply to the strings. I find that an additional benefit is that I always know exactly where my pick is, relative to the strings, because my hand is 'anchored' at the bridge. I sometimes have to shift my hand a bit, to accomodate the reach of my pick, but I find this technique works well for me.

to me palm muting is a very important skill, and not difficult if you do it right:

one thing people do is put too much of their hand on the strings, giving them a "tick" and dead string sound. Rest most of your hand on the bridge, with maybe 1/2" touching the strings (or maybe more, depending on how muted you want it). Try it out and see if that works.

Yeah, that's the sound I get. I'll have to try to fix this problem when I get home.

maybe you are playing the wrong guitar...I find it hard to palm mute with afloyd rose type vibrato. much easier with a gibson style bridge and humbuckers.

My friend seems to be able to palm mute it just fine. I'm pretty sure that it's just me (aka Worst.GuitarPlayer.Ever)

looks like the right guitar,,just keep working at the technique. A little distortion really helps too. Do you ever listen to Bad Company or the Rolling Stones? Both Mick Ralphs and Keith Richards are great at the technique.
Use a light touch at first then gradually you will learn to increase pressure as you need to.
