to me palm muting is a very important skill, and not difficult if you do it right:

one thing people do is put too much of their hand on the strings, giving them a "tick" and dead string sound. Rest most of your hand on the bridge, with maybe 1/2" touching the strings (or maybe more, depending on how muted you want it). Try it out and see if that works.
