Hi there,

I'm new to Guitar Tricks and I'm really interested in signing up for the fundamentals course.

This probably shows how fundamental I am right now but in the intro video, the guy has an electric guitar. I have bought an acoustic guitar. Are the lessons geared toward electric guitars only or will I be able to use my acoustic?

Many thanks,

Steve

Hi Steve!

You will do just fine with your acoustic guitar. There are tons of lessons on the website that are taught for, and on, acoustic guitar.

That being said, the fundamentals of guitar playing, such as chords, scales, theory, are the same on electric and acoustic guitar. The notes are the same, the electric guitar just has more frets.

If you later want to dig deeper into styles like rock and metal you'll be better off with an electric guitar. But, until then, your acoustic will do just fine.

Yep, everything he just said. :) Welcome to the site. LOTS of great videos to learn from. I've been here 2.5 years and have enjoyed every minute of it and learned a ton.

Welcome to the site Steve. One thing to keep in mind is that while Guitar Tricks has laid things out in a logical manner, so for instance you can start with Fundamentals 1, and move on to 2 etc, there's nothing that stops you from jumping into other lesson's as well.

If you like acoustic guitar, and since you've got an acoustic, go ahead and start the Fundamentals course. But what I would recommend is as soon as you have some chords down, or more importantly, HOW to learn chords down, go ahead and check out Lisa McCormick's "Fingerpicking for Beginners" course. If she shows you a chord you don't know, just learn in by taking the same approach that Chris teaches you in the Fundamentals course. Once you know the chords to any song Lisa is teaching, you can then learn the finger-picking parts. I think you'll find this very rewarding.

Good luck and welcome to the site.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the great advice. Will be signing up this week and getting started.

Really looking forward to it. This guitar of mine will be so much happier once I actually start using it :)

All the best

Steve

I always think it's funny when non-guitar players ask me, "so, do you play acoustic or electric guitar. That always makes me chuckle, because they are both guitars, and basically the exact same thing. You fingers will get much stronger playing acoustic though :) Have fun and practice a lot. The beginning is a steep learning curve, but so worth it once you learn how to play chords and everything.
