I bought a new set of strings. Ernie Ball Super Slinky. I tried to restring and broke my high E string. :( I went out and bought another set only this time regular Ernie Ball Slinky strings. I need a tip on how not to break that string. I tried to tune with the tuning feature on my amp. I've never used that feature before. It is a new amp. I have a Roland Cube 30X.

One other question, will this amp be sufficient to learn to play metal on?

I'm guessing you went to high, and it broke, some chromatic tuners recognize just the note, not the octave. Try using the tuner on the site, or something that has a tone so you can hear the notes.

I don't know much about that amp, but as long as you've got distortion you can learn to play metal.

Let me know if this helps, and just one other thing. The 6th (big E) string in the 1st fret is an F note, same as the dial tone on a phone.

What you're doing is considered standard tuning, it's also called A440. I think I have this right, the A vibrates 440 times a second. It's been a long time since I thought about that, I just tune my guitar now.

A guitar can stay in tune for a few days, if the temperature is consistent, and you tune after you play it for about 10 minutes. Do as much as you can with the fretboard hand, and this will warm the neck up.

You guys try it, and let me know what you think.

I got the job done. Thanks. It turns out that I was using the tuning feature on my amp incorrectly. I have always tuned by ear in the past. I learned to play a little bit on a nylon stringed acoustic guitar about 37 years ago.

Now learning to play metal is an entirely different ball game. I really haven't learned to control the sound coming out of my amp. Not even sure where to start. I went back to absolute beginner and learned a lot about my guitar. I also learned I have been holding my pick wrong. But other than that, I don't think that I picked up any other bad habits.
