What you're doing is considered standard tuning, it's also called A440. I think I have this right, the A vibrates 440 times a second. It's been a long time since I thought about that, I just tune my guitar now.

A guitar can stay in tune for a few days, if the temperature is consistent, and you tune after you play it for about 10 minutes. Do as much as you can with the fretboard hand, and this will warm the neck up.
