My first post here. Been a member a few weeks but just starting to become active after my new guitar arrived yesterday (Epiphone Les Paul).

I'm looking for a good stand having read a lot of horror stories about stands that damage the finish on the neck. Anyone got any recommendations?

Thanks.

Welcome to the boards :)

I use Stagg guitar stands and have done for 3 yrs now with no damage to the finish on any of my guitars, the body and neck supports are padded, they don't cost the earth, the just do exactly what they're meant to.

Just look for something that has soft material in places that touch the guitar. You don't want the guitar to stick in any way at all, so straight rubber is not the best idea. You mentioned the neck of the guitar, but also be aware of the base that it is being sat on. Id be worried about the body of the guitar as well since all the weight is there.

If its for a home studio you should seriously look at wall hangers. I have 4 guitars up in my studio, out of reach of the kids hands, no chance of knocks or dings plus the neck is nice and secure - no chance it can warp. I still have some basic stands for when I'm recording - just back ones from the local guitar shop, plenty of rubber on the bottom and at the neck holders coverred with a foam that keeps the rubber out of direct contact with the neck (can be an issue if sticky rubber becomes in contact with an unfinished neck). Just be sure the feet of the stand are wide apart so that it is very secureand won''t fall over. A little strap at the neck position to keep the guitar from falling out if knocked is also highly recommended.

That might be a good idea. I'll see if the wife is happy with me drilling holes in the wall!

I´ve been using Hercules Stands only. They have a good solid stand and the neck is fixed by an auto-grab system that locks the neck once you put the guitar on the stand. That way it can't fall out by accident. Also, the foam rubber they use is laqueur-proof, so it doesnt harm the finish of your guitar. Some stands do have foam rrubber (or just rubber) that - over time - starts to sort of 'melt' into the finish of your guitar and ruin it. The hercules don't.

For years, I've been using stands that support the body directly, and just cradle the neck in a kind of stirrup with a strap across it to keep the guitar from falling out. I've had far too many close calls with these things because thay can be tipped over too easily.

My next stand will be the kind that cups the headstock, like a wall hanger, and just provides a pad for the body to lean back against. I used a buddy's stand like this last week, and I can say it's a much more stable design.

+1 for the Hercules stand. The auto-grab system is very cool and has saved the guitar a couple of times already from small children and an overactive pooch.

Guitar Center usually has these on sale for around $35. Well worth it.
