Who do you guys think the best Bass Player is? I like Metallica's old bassist, Cliff Burton. I've heard a couple of his bass solos and they just blow me away. He had a good beat with him too. I also like the bassist from Rancid, beleive it or not. I have a couple of their albums and he sounds really good. I think he has a lot of potential.

Best bass playa...BILLY SHEEHAN!

John Myung is was up there too, although in DT there isn't much room for crazy bass, just the fact that he keeps up with them and holds everything down, and when he gets a solo (Dance of Eternity), he rips.

I have a bit of a list for this one...

#Tim Commerford, formerly of RATM and Audioslave: while I was playing bass, this guy was my hero. Groovy, subtle, solid, funky, jazzy, flashy - he can do it all.

#Roger Waters

#Rick Laird from the Mahavishnu Orchestra

#Les Claypool (can't believe I was the first one to mention him!) from Primus

#Amen to Geddy Lee and John Myung, killer players.

#Geezer Butler

#John Patitucci

No disrespect meant to Cliff Burton, but some of his solos are basically just guitar solos played on a bass... not what I look for in a bass solo at all. But for the most part, he's an excellent player, and definitely one of the best musicians Metallica has ever had.

Wish I knew his name but he was a bass player opening up for Supertramp in a band called Jean Luc Ponty in Toronto. Actually, the whole band kinda blew us away considering that the guy on lead played violin.
Close second would be Geddy Lee... mainly cause he can sing lead and play at the same time.

.. and the bass player/lead singer for Level 42.
Saw him in concert at MapleLeaf Gardens and he rocked.

I hate saying the "best" anything...

All the bassists that have been listed are among the greatest of all time!

There are different kinds of bassists out there... some that sit in the pocket and groove it... some that can step beside any lead guitarist and play lick for lick with them... some that slap some that pick...

Noel Redding.
Cliff Burton.... I always say that he played the 3rd guitar in Metallica since Metallica used almost no bass frequency in their early stuff and Cliff played the bass like a guitar...
Bill Sheehan... same as Cliff Burton
Les Claypool.... I mean come on!! He did the Seinfeld them music!!! haha
Pino Palladino... plays with the John Mayer Trio... guy is money in the pocket.
The dude from Dream Theater is amazing... watching him go note for note with Ruddess and Petrucci is amazing.
Roger Waters.
The dude from Tool.

Those are some of my favorites.

I feel compelled to mention this also. I've got a buddy I went to high school with who is ridiculously good at bass. I honestly would not be surprised to see him go pro with some sort of jazz or funk ensemble soon.

His name is Gavin Hardy. I'll link you to a page of his old band with poor recordings that you can't hear the bass well on it, but this band is jammin. I really recommend listening to the Soulive cover "First Street" they did. The guitarist is awesome also.

I'm not sure what you mean here, what do you think a bass solo is. Whats your idea of a good bass solo. Take a listen 2 Amnesia from Metallica and you'll know what I mean.

No kidding. 3 very talented guys. I've jammed with the bassist when I was just starting out, so I really couldn't play much at the time. The drummer I've played in concert band with during high school. The guitarist I've never had the privilege to meet or to jam with, but I couldn't keep up with him anyways. He knows his jazz and plays it very well.

This, this (amazing!), and this are examples of the kind of bass solos I like best. I prefer a more rhythmic approach - the bass, after all, is a rhythm instrument. Like Aschleman said, Cliff played the bass like a guitar when he soloed... but on the other hand, he played some absolutely rock-solid bass lines, which for me are the most memorable part of his playing.
