This is really the first class in school I have found to be really interesting. I have a final tomorrow, which I should do good on hopefully. Anyways, I've never been so intrigued in what I am learning in school. The teacher is really good too, he gets into these really deep discussions about the economic situation of the country and it really makes me think. Has anyone else taken classes/courses in economics?
If there's one thing I've learned, it's that life is one crushing defeat after another until you just wish Flanders was dead.

Rock stars ... is there anything they don't know?

I have taken a few economics courses years ago. It is an interesting topic. A good professor can turn any subject into something interesting. On the opposite side, a bad professor can turn something that would be naturally interesting into something dull and lifeless. :)

Isn't that the truth...I resorted to doodling and zoning out during an Advanced Recording Techniques class I took in college due to the teacher. Despite the state of the art studio, that class was only cool when we did hands on set-up and tweaking...but those lectures were brutal.
I've only had limited experience with economics, and what little I gathered was on my own. They really should place more emphasis on it at the public school level. It's no wonder why Americans can't manage their own finances if they don't grasp some of the basic concepts of debt, taxes, inflation, business models, etc. I'm positive this has led to our own government not being held accountable for it's overspending as well.

In our country, we have a little different schoolin system...In high school, you have to decide what you want to be in life and enrole the school by that.
I finished economy as a high school and currently I am studying economy in college.Maybe that is the reason I don"t share your enthusiasm...I don"t find
economics quite that interesting...When you get the main points, everything else is just beating arond the bush. But I do share an opinion mentioned above.
A teacher makes the class interesting, that is a fact.Hey, if you need any kind of clarification in economics... :D ;)

I find it quite interesting and I 100% agree that it should be a bigger part of middle and high school curriculums. So many people end up in debt for life because they simply don't understand interest rates, taxes, etc. I've taken macro and microeconomics, accounting, and business law. If it's offered, its always a good idea to take a personal finance-type course. Can't overstate the importance of understanding the rules and how to play the game...

I'm a Socialist when it comes to economics. I hate capitalism no matter how "fair" it may seem. Economics was a required course in High School here. I did the work and aced the tests but I had no interest in learning how corporations drain the working class of all they work for.

Yup. So many people get caught up in 'chasing the dream' in America. Huge house, nice car, fancy vacations - no matter that they cannot afford them. They end up financial hostages. I have a few friends like that. Big, beautiful home...etc but they are stretched so tight, they have virtually no furniture and if they miss ONE paycheck, they will be in serious trouble. They are in their thirties. Is that anyway to live your life? Terrified that it can all vanish in an instant? I'm not saying that you have to live like a hermit, squirreling away cash and going without...but you have to be smart about how you spend.

The techer is definetely a big part of it. He has very liberal views, often I agree 100% with. And he makes everything really interesting. Another thing is he has taught us how many problems there are in the country right now, and how the government isn't doing anything about them. Its kind of scary how there are a lot of huge problems which a lot of people don't know anything about. For example, by the year 2010, there will be more retirees than workers. Which basicly means by the time The young generation is retired, there will be no money left for social security or medicare. Especially the way the government is spending way more than they gain in revenue, resulting in huge deficits, and owing of huge sums of money to other countries. SO they are basicly irresponsibly spending money they don't have.

Econ is required in our school(9th grade), though it was only for the first half of the school year, I'm glad it was required, but now I have to take civics, which I'm far less excited about.

You know, it's kinda hard to think of someone that is purely an economist, other than those in academics or government. So it got me wondering...what else do they do? This result was at the top of my search, and was actually the only one I looked at...but that's cuz it seemed rather informative for my level of curiosity. Hope it is for you as well.

Are there any opinions on economics as a career?

Hmmmm...Here present.I don"t know if any of you guys have seen the thread I posted before.I finished high school of economy I don"t know how else to describe it.It is kind of hard, we have a radically different schooling system.
With that school, I could get a job as a clerk of any kind; in a private firm, in a bank, in a state firm...Doing anything from accounting to comercial business.
Of course, since corruption is among highest in the Europe around here, that is not the case.Nepotism works much better than finishing school, but this is
strictly theoretical thread, right?
Now, since my folks didn"t have any cash, and I have a kid bro and sister at home, I didn"t went to college after school. My folks couldn"t afford it; so instead, I went to the army (obligatory round here).Afterwards; I got a job
and now I have enrolled a college. But not as a regular student, but studying with work.Difficult it is.So, I am studying economy at a moment. Here, in college, we have to specialize in the field of economy you would like to work in.As much as I understood, you do that in high school.I choose accounting, cause it was the simplest thing to enroll. Now, if I hopefully, finish that,
I can get a job as above mentioned, and other options are available then.
I could teach in school, or be an academic.Pretty much it.
