Hi all.

I am playing 'dumbed down' jazz type gigs using a Peavey Rage 158 (My Marshall 212 50w combo is definitely unsuitable :D )

This was fine until the last job where we played in a larger hall.

So now I'm thinking I should up things a bit to a 20-30watt 1 speaker combo type amp with maybe a few more bells & whistles.

Being Christmas & all the idea has met with provisional approval from the War Office.

So I'm thinking I can't go too far wrong with a Fender, but a salesman I spoke to is all for a Roland Cube 30. Now the other guitarist in our little group has a Roland and it sounds fine.

I was also thinking Randall but the sales guy panned it.

What do you think guys? Fender or Roland or anything else good?

I just picked up a Tech 21 Trademark 60 and this lil beast blows almost any amp tube or otherwise out of the water. So much so that I'm thinking of selling both my 40 and 60 watt tube amps and picking up the Tech 21 Power Engine 60 to slave off the TM60.

Has a clean pristine sound that rivals a Fender Twin Reverb in channel one and channel two, well let's just say I've taken all my overdrive and fuzz boxes and put them in storage..lol.

*moved to Gear Discussion

Try out a Peavey Valveking if you can. It has a very nice clean channel that some have said is reminiscent of a Fender clean. And, with 50 tube watts, you'll have plenty of clean headroom. I put an Eminence Wizard speaker in mine, and it really opened it up. It has a nice and versatile overdrive channel too, if you need it.

What's your budget for your new amp?

Budget would probably be about $375.00 US, but that doesn't buy as much here as it would in the USA.

I really don't want to go over 30watts as I have my neglected Marshall.

I want the convenience of a 1 speaker combo with a little more grunt and a few effects.

Yet another sales guy is strongly recommending the Roland Cube 30. I will try it out Wednesday when I go to the 'big city' :D

Any problems with this one?

I've heard some pretty good things about it, so if it sounds good to you, I don't see why it wouldn't be a good amp.

Thanks for the post on 'How to find the right amp'. When I bought the Marshall it was a long time ago and things were brutally basic :D

Fender or Martshall (maybe Vox) & solid state was definitely uncool. It's great how far things have come....but maddening in the choices available.

Re the JC 90. I will try it out tomorrow. I need one that is easy to carry and this one comes with WHEELS!! Bad sign? At 40w per speaker it might be overpowered for my meagre needs.

I tried the Marshall in the garage the other day. S***!! it's LOUD!!

Nah, The wheels (usually reffered to as castors) are just for easy transportation. A lot of 412 cabs have em so you can just roll um across the floor instead of carrying them.

I think he meant needing wheels on the amp as being a bad sign of aging

remember the jc is solid state so it won't be too loud(plus you get volume knobs as an added bonus ;) )

I Suggest looking at Laney. I've used loads of their amps over the years, and never found a bad one. There's a TT50 combo that's very nice - 3 channel with independant EQ. I have the head version.... it's better that the Mesa Boogie I had (though no-one believes me!)....

I used to have a Laney Vc 50, which was an all tube 2x12 combo. It made some awesome noises tho. It may be a bit too loud for your needs...not may be...that thing was damn loud!!! But they do make the Lc15R which is a great 1x12 (i think, could be 1x10) all tube amp, with amazing clean tone, and nice overdrive as well...its also very easily carried and really portable

For this sort of tip - check this .... lets you chuck your POD/Whatever in a valve amp without adding any further colour to the modelled tone....

Twas only a thought..... I'm sure your Flextone is very nice.... :o

ohh right assumed it would be solid state.

that actually might be an idea. hmm

i only wonder is it not true the more stuff u go through to get the sound the more the sound quality degrades.

aslo if i go from the left and right speaker outs would i plug it into that valuve thing as if it where a cab or what?

using a POD and that Atomic amp, is no different (signal chain wise) than your Flextone, or any other amp for that matter.... preamp--->power amp--->speaker.
