Don't rush yourself mate, I've been playing a couple years and I'm just thinking of joining a band. But hey - anything's possible. I learned on an easy version of 'Sweet Home Alabama', just the chords and one of the licks. 'You Were Meant For Me' from Jewel was good too. 'Be Like That' from Three Doors Down and 'Collide' from Howie Day were easy enough. Also, check out Mel Bay. I had a tab book of that when I first started, helped a lot with dexterity. Hope at least one of these helps - Good luck!
Don't worry. I shred.

It depends what kind of stuff you want to play.

Learning the guitar for me is more about the mechanics than learning songs one by one - try learning the major/minor scales and all the 'open' major and minor chords maybe? That'll give you alot more freedom...

Once you have them down, you could all of a sudden play hundreds of songs without as much effort as learning them one by one...

Very true. Why don't you tell us what your band is supposed to be playing and we'll point you in the right direction. Here's some links to sites that have a bunch of easy songs to play.

Out of curiousity are all your other bandmates learning their instruments in the same fashion?

Some of the legendary songs will be great to start with. I suggest that you learn something from Eric Clapton. "Wonderful Tonight" is quite easy.

I'm also quite new to guitar playing (read absolute beginner hehe).
Basicly I play some chords and do some random picking. Just so i get the feeling. But I also know a few easy songs: Everybody hurts REM, Strangelove Depeche Mode, intro for Nothing Else Matters, Country Feedback REM...

Just browse some tab sites and you'll surely find some great songs that are not very hard to play.

I hate that. And it gets annoying when a bunch of friends are hanging out and someone has a guitar and they say they can play a song and they play the first couple bars of it and quit......... You don't KNOW a song until you can play it from start to finish. Make sure you learn whole songs... it will help you develope a sense of how to write songs as well... as well as teach you how the notes mesh with each... I also suggest learning all guitar parts to songs that have multiple guitar parts... i always learn the leads and the rhythms. Nothing Else Matters is a beginner song from start to finish... the solo is even one of the easier solols you can learn... Work on that song if you want... Here's a list of other easy songs to work on... remember, try to learn the whole song.

Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana along with every other Nirvana song you can imagine
Outside - Staind
Flake - Jack Johnson
Anything by Greenday
Wish you were Here - Pink floyd

Those are just some of the songs that I started out learning... Don't be afraid to challenge yourself though... And remember to always work through the frustration... You're not going to learn how to play the guitar and get good without getting frustrated everynow and then... Just work at it and know that it will come.

God I love that song. Well i'm now trying to play whole songs, but i'm still an absolute beginner and my picking sucks like hell. I hope I'll make some improvements with a heavier pick... Luckily I don't get discouraged easily hehe.

Hi the first song i learnt was sunshine of your love by cream. That was fairly simple.
anything in 12 bar blues would be easy

i do agree with whomever said it that u should learn about why your playing certain things not how to play it as in learn a scale instead of copying their solo

I'm gonna have to agree with the ppl who have said learn scales and thoery, also work on your ear from the very begining, that is something I wish I had started much sooner than I did. Also learning songs doesn't really help you learn to write songs unless your just going to rip everything you write off someone else, I no only know two songs all the way through, and that is only becasue they are strumming songs that repeat a four bar pattern the entire way thorugh except for the chorus which is a slightly different four bar pattern. I spent he first year of my playing learn scales and practicing them like mad, litterally playing up and down the penatonic scale for hours, getting my fingers used to moving around it. Then I moved on to modes and more complex ways of playing (I was also working on techniques like pull offs, trills, ect.) all the stuff I knew, I learned lots of theory which I am still learning. If I want to learn more about writing music it's very simple, I listen to music, I dont need to learn it because I know what they're playing and why they are playing it.

It is also nice to be able to get the key of a song in just a few seconds. It helps to know about the genre your dealing with too, even right down to the artist your dealing with. Almost all rock songs are writen in A, E, or G and they almost all use the pentatonic scale prettty heavily.

That said if your going into a cover band for some reason ;) just learn a bunch of songs you like, all the way through, but also learn scales, particularly the pentatonic and blues scale since that will help you to make your solos and such original rather than just ripping it off the artist your covering.
