What is best shred guitar
I woul like to buy the best shred guitar available. I have plenty of cash. What do you think I should buy? I have 10 guitars now, but no shredder. Is a JEM the best bet? Thanks

And I have an Ibanez fetish....
JEMs are great, I have a few and cannot fault them. I also have RGs, and disagree that they are only for shred - I use mine for all sorts of styles. It's very much a personal thing and if you have enough cash for a JEM it might even be worth having something built custom just for you. You might find the string spacing on a wizard neck a little odd - they're wider than standard.
I would also recommend you check out the Musicman Petrucci model - it's beautiful and the neck is a work of art on it's own....
A friend of mine shreds on a fender tele with a neck the size of a baseball bat - a proper full handful (as does John 5). You don't need a shred guitar to shred.
If you'd be interested in a compromise, I play my Ibanez JS more than anything else and the only slight disadvantage to it is it's 22 fret rather than 24.... it's compund radius makes chords and lead easy...

Get a guitar that feels confortable to you. Thin necks are most associated with shredders, but if your hands are too big, then it can be a band thing. Zakk Wylde cant shred on any guitar but Les Pauls. And some people cant even put their entire hand around the Les Paul neck. It really depends on yourself.
But take not that most shred guitar necks are satinized and not glossy. Which makes your fretting hand glide across the neck and doesnt friction upon sweat buildup.

Surprised ESP haven't been mentioned yet. Their M, MH, H, X and AX series are apparently quite shred-worthy, and there are shredders and shred-influenced guitarists (George Lynch, Dave Mustaine, Alexi Laiho, Kirk Hammett, Michael Amott, Michael Wilton) who have ESP signature guitars. Best thing is, they all look cool. :D

Go for the Music Man Petrucci. I've only got the OLP knockoff, but damn it plays fast. The Music Man is also versatile as it's got the piezo pickup as well. The only thing is, you might find the whole thing a little small...but it's all about preference.
Good luck. :)

I concur, if you have the cash Ibanez Jem's are execellent and perfect for fast fretwork. I also have an Ernie Ball Music Man Petrucci signature 7 string, amazing tone and the smoothest, fastest neck I've ever played. The only negativ for the EBMM is the lack of a top lock - it has a floating trem so it goes out of tune easily (serious design flaw in my book). Both the Jem and EBMM are amazing and rank as the top guitars I have owned and/or played. Also worth checking are Ibanez Prestige models (I switched the stock pups for EMG actives in mine). The Jackson Soloist is also a nice model. As another Jem fetishist :D , I have to say Jem's are the best shred machine out there, they also have great bluesy tones and lovely clean sounds so you won't be restricted to metal if you get one. I got BIG hands and I've never played a guitar that I considered too small (I'm 6ft 6 and lift weights like crazy).

I don't know about the best shredder, but My Ibanez JS1200CA plays like butter and is able to get all kinds of great humbucker and single coil tones.
Not only that, the body is shaped very curvy, no squared off block of wood look like the JEM's have. It's very light too.
There's a couple reviews on this site if you are interested

Are Strats out of the question? I have a deluxe plus that I practice everyday on. Do you guys think an Ibanez or a Jackson makes that much of a difference over a Fender, or is it just splitting hairs? I also have an awesome green archtop Peavey EVH, but the thing is so damn beautiful that I'm reluctant to use it.

the guitar that feels best in your hands is the best shred guitar for you.
all the rest is petty speculation and mental masturbation.
....though i am one for mastabarty activities sooooo
the best shred guitar ever would have to be the parker fly mojo.

personally i find it quite hard to shred well on a strat due to the fat neck and the curvy fretboard radius. but that just might be because i aint used to it. i feel mor comfortable playin blues and chordy stuff on a strat.
but then again Yngwie Malmsteen plays on a strat and ne is dam fast.

you can shred on anything.... it's just not as easy on a Gretsch White Falcon as it is on a JEM.
With the question being, 'what is the best shred guitar' you're looking at a 'super strat' of some description probably. As it's 'shred', it's going to want to have that attitude as well probably. Chris Impelliteri uses a strat though, and he's lightening quick... If you can play, no-one takes the p*ss out of your guitar, and if you can't but you're packing a pink reverse headstocked jackson then people are gonna laugh at you...
Malmsteen has a scalloped fretboard, and only ever uses E Harmonic Minor - if he couldn't play it fast by now, he should go home.
If you like Fender guitars, shred on Fender guitars. You play best on what you play most.... it's all just familiarity and solid technique...

I have two Strats with different necks, bridges, etc.
Neither one of them plays as precise as my Ibanez JS1200ca.
The strats are way more crude feeling but still nice guitars.

Wow Akira dude, I love the shape of the Fly Mojo...played a gorgeous one once...but alas it was not to be...bit too much cash.
as for the nicest shred guitar,I'm gonna go with most people here and say "whatever feels and plays bets to you". My personal favourites include the Parker Fly Mojo, and Ibanez Rgt2020 (which is kinda like an Rg, but gorgeous mahogany (or Ash) wings, on a purple heart and walnut (I think) thru-neck...really toneful, fast guitar...I find the standard basswood Rg's toneless, and the same with the Jems)

.
very true. Anything over a 12 inch radius is too flat for my taste.

wow, someone else who likes the flies. i only have a p-38 but it works great for what i do. i'm not much of a shredder as much as more playing chords and occassionally some bluesy solos...more of a songwriter type. i've been eyeballing the PM20 pros lately...if you haven't checked them out, i'd suggest you do...great guitar if you want to go more the les paul route but want more features (like locking tuners and coil tapping and a nice superfast smooth ebony fretboard).

Well, I don't do too much shredding so I don't really know, but if I were to buy a good shred guitar I would probably reach for a Jackson or an Ibanez.
