How are they doing that?

OK, I admit, I am an 80's metalhead, but I love a lot of new bands like Shadows Fall. My question is how to they go from that barking voice to actually singing. I could do it for a few minutes, but after that my voice is shot and I would think anyone's would be. Is there an effect they are using, or are these dudes just gargling shattered glass daily.

Thanks
Shane

They don't record it in one go. They record a line, drink some water, and then record the next.

But still that would make for a short career, especially if they had to tour. Wouldn't you think?

It varies from singer to singer - some people's vocal chords just seem to be more resilient than others', I suppose. Mark Hunter from Chimaira has been screaming his head off for almost a decade now, but his clean pipes are still as good as ever. Matt Heafy from Trivium, on the other hand, has only recorded 3 CDs' worth of music and his voice is already starting to suffer. I had a listen to Trivium's cover of "Master of Puppets" the other day, and he sounded like a Marlboro veteran.

The whole reason I am asking is that I sing ok. I am a guitar player and have found a trick to singing. I play the melody line on a track using the guitar, and then I sing on another track the same melody and it keeps me on pitch and time.

I have taken a real liking to bands like Children of Bodom, and Shadows Fall, and AFI. That's pretty cool for a 37 year old father of two huh? Anyway I want to write some stuff using that "scream" voice and I am trying figure out how to do it without blowing my pipes for the real singing.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I've seen ads in Guitar World for throat sprays that are suppose to help your vocal chords.

If you compare their cover to the actual Metallica tune you can tell Heafy is trying to sound like Hetfield but isn't quite pulling it off.

I think it boils down to the individual. Phil Anselmo could scream himself silly and still pull out a melodic tone after many cd's and tours. Some have vocal chords that can take the punishment and others can't. Also realize thet these guys have the cash and access to doctors who can provide the care to keep those pipes working.

really, growling/screaming/barking/anything along those lines mess with your vocal chords. its almost like you have to retrain your singing voice on how to work like that. it takes awhile.

My sarcastic input would be to say "Stop wanting to write that awful **** and stick to normal vocals."

I was listening to this thing the other day, some of them scream and eventually screw up their vocal chords really bad, but a lot of them do it in a special way, supposedly seperate from their voice so they don;t damage their voice, its weird, but this lady who apparently trains a lot of metal singers to do that was talking about it
